New Mexico's Eyeliners share new style with El Paso

Austin, Seattle and Los Angeles are the cities that typically come to mind when thinking of music scenes.
The Eyeliners would like to add Albuquerque to that list.
"Areas like (Albuquerque) tend to have a lot of great musicians," Eyeliners singer Laura Baca said in a telephone interview from Providence, R.I., where the band was performing. "Cities like that are isolated, so there are not as many things to do so you get immersed in the music. It's really great for kids to have stuff to do. Music is a great thing."
The trio – made up of the Baca sisters – Laura, vocals and drums; Lisa, bass; and Gel, guitar – will bring their style of punk music to El Paso Saturday when they perform at the House of Rock & Roll.
They are touring in support of their latest CD "No Apologies" released on BLACKHEART RECORDS and produced by KENNY LAGUNA (Bow Wow Wow, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Kathleen Hanna/Le Tigre/Bikini Kill).
"The album is kind of hard to compare to our previous work," Baca said. "Our stuff in the past has been very rock 'n' roll and punk pop. We definitely elaborated on what people would expect from us. The new songs are very new and different. We definitely kept the roots so you see flavors of that."
She said it was important to go beyond punk on this CD even though it started there.
"In our teens we discovered punk rock," Baca said. "We started buying Clash records, Stiff Little Fingers and the Ramones. That started our love of punk."
Baca said the band is enjoying playing new music.
"It's been a lot of fun. It's been amazing," Baca said. "We just got through a U.S. tour with Social Distortion where we were selling 80 CDs per night, which is a lot. It was crazy."
Fans aren't the only ones taking notice. Alternative Press earlier this summer had a write-up on the group, which Baca said was very flattering because it compared them to Green Day.
After playing cover songs, the band decided to write and perform their own music. Before devoting herself full time to singing, necessity led Baca to have to play another instrument in the band.
"I always loved to sing so I was going to be the singer," Baca said. "We were looking for a drummer and having problems finding one, so one time, I was messing around on the drums and they just taught me a simple drum beat. Ironically, it was the beat to 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll.' They said 'You can keep a beat and you can sing.' It's funny how things work out."
Funny, because JOAN JETT, who wrote "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," ended up signing them to her BLACKHEART RECORDS label.
