Larry Laguna

Lawrence Laguna, of Oceanside NY.

An award winning architect of the Long Island, New York City and New Jersey areas. Mr. Laguna was also part of the team that designed and planned Guantanamo Bay Air Base on Cuba during World War II. Nicknamed "Gitmo", it is used to detain enemy combatants in the war on terrorism. He had the nation's highest security clearance for this work.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Mr. Laguna went to Stuyvesant High School and New York University, where he received several 1st prizes for outstanding architectural design work.

Mr. Laguna was the designer of many institutional, commercial and public buildings, including public libraries, police stations, banks and factories during a career which began in 1937.

His work on the Oceanside Jewish Center won him the First Annual Town Award, a design award for most outstanding example of furthering the beautification of the Town of Hempstead. He did work for the Oceanside Lutheran Church, Cold Spring Country Club and many other local institutions. He designed apartment buildings in Freeport and Rockville Centre, adding to the modernization and beauty of those towns and others on Long Island.

He designed the Leonia NJ Public Library and the Jackson Heights (Queens) Public Library to much acclaim, including one from the Queens Chamber of Commerce for the Most Outstanding Building erected in 1950.

A member of AIA and N.C.A.R.B., Mr. Laguna's numerous awards and medals for design go back to as early as 1940. He is survived by his wife, the noted American artist Mariella Laguna of Oceanside; son Kenny and wife Meryl of Rockville Centre, son Sanford and wife Hillary of Hollywood, Florida. His grandchildren include Carianne, Peri, Nicky and Chad.
