JOAN JETT lives up to her good reputation for hard-hitting rock shows

JOAN JETT looked and sounded like she could mess you up real good Thursday night at the Brady Theater.
In not-so-subtle fashion, the leather-clad bottle-blonde with an attitude declared that she's the kind of gal who doesn't give a spit about what people think. She likes singing about two of her favorite things -- sex and rock 'n' roll -- and if you don't like it, well, get lost.
When Jett opened her mouth and sang tunes culled from her more than 20-year career, she sounded like she'd spent a lifetime carousing in shady back rooms drinking stupid galoots under the table, smoking Marlboro Reds and picking fights just for the heck of it.
After all, isn't she the feisty lady who doesn't "give a damn" about her "bad reputation"?
Well, that's just her on-stage persona. Jett's actually got a Cadillac-sized heart and is willing to lend her music to help raise money for worthy charities, such as Tulsa's Domestic Violence Intervention Services Inc.
She wasn't alone in the battle to squelch domestic violence Thursday night during DVIS' Seeds of Hope Concert. The oh-so-soothing pianist Jim Brickman opened the show, followed by local country diva Mary Cogan. Together, the trio raised funds for DVIS, which provides comprehensive intervention and prevention services to men, women and children affected by domestic violence.
Although the lineup was a bit odd, the overall concert wasn't as jarring as one might have thought.
Jett was obviously the best of the bunch. During her hour-and-a-half performance, Jett had the decent-sized crowd rocking like they were in a small New York club rather than the cavernous Brady.
Jett said she loves playing the Brady because the historic venue was where she was on stage in 1982 when she first heard that "I Love Rock and Roll" had finally hit No. 1.
It's been more than two decades since that milestone, but Jett put on a show Thursday night that this crowd won't soon forget. It was as if they had a Hefty bag of dimes, and Jett was the human juke box into which they could plop in 10 cents for a flurry of her greatest hits, ranging from "Cherry Bomb," which she recorded with the RUNAWAYS in '76, to that first No. 1 hit.
Aside from her original material, Jett has eclectic taste in covers, such as the Replacements' "Androgynous," Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People" and Tommy James & the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover."
On Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me," Jett coaxed the crowd into singing the "yeah, oh yeah's" throughout the sexually overt tune. At one point, she leaned over, put her hands on her knees and let the crowd sing unaccompanied. Jett wanted the most impact, so like a yoga instructor raised on rock 'n' roll, she advised the crowd to take deep breaths and sing from their diaphragms.
The musical exercise was just another element in the show that had the crowd on their feet -- and in Jett's hands.
But the covers didn't get much better than the theme song to "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" entitled "Love is All Around." All that was missing was Jett tossing a beret into the Brady's rafters.
Here's a startling fact, according to the concert's emcee: About every 7 seconds there's an incident of domestic violence, which means in the time it took Jett to play her 90 minute set, there were about 770 incidences of domestic violence.
It's a mean world out there, so it was nice to escape it for a while Thursday night and to know DVIS has a bit more dough to battle against those who express their anger with fists and cruel words.
