How do you feel about tradition?
What amps do you record with?
Is there a way to get a demo to BLACKHEART RECORDS?
Dear Joan,
I have been a fan of yours since I was nine years old back in 1980 on Long Island, your cassette for I Love Rock and Roll was the first rock I ever owned. Since then, I have seen you many many times all over the country. I still have my original video taping of the 84-85 MTV new years eve ball that you performed at and I still have my Bad Reputation tour shirt. I was also the only person I know as a teenager to have my room covered in JOAN JETT and Misfits posters. I hope you don't mind answering a few questions.
1.Also being from Long Island, I was wondering where on Long Island you were from.
2. Speaking of the aforementioned New Years Eve Ball, I know you put a few tracks on the Live DVD, but is there any chance of the whole show being released since it was so great.
3. Will The RUNAWAYS "Waiting for the Night" ever make it to CD since it seems to be the only one that hasn't.
4. Is there a way to get a demo to BLACKHEART RECORDS?
Thank you, I think talking to your fans is the greatest, and we all love your music and what you do for us, thanks for working so hard!
Sincerely, Stephen
Dear Stephen,
Thanks a lot for your questions. Will do my best to answer. I was born in Philly, and lived on the east coast till I was 12 an then I moved to California, where I lived until '79. I then moved back east to NY and settled initially on Long Island, but I am not from Long Island. Many people do think I grew up in New York or on Long Island.
I thought the New Years Ball Show was on some sort of video, but maybe I'm thinking of bootlegs. We are speaking to several DVD companies that want to put it out, and I am sure it will be out before too long.
The RUNAWAYS "Waiting for the Night" will most likely never come out on CD unless we do it ourselves, which is always possible.
Yes, there is a way to get a demo to BLACKHEART RECORDS. Just send to the address of Blackheart. DO NOT send your only copy.
All the best,
JJ*
First of all, I just want to say that I think you are such a strong role model for females in the rock industry... you definitely can keep up with the boys. I've been a BLACKHEARTS fan since I was in diapers (dad didn't really like the sing along tapes for kids). My favorite cover you guys did was Rebel, Rebel and I was just wondering if you collaborated with David Bowie at all before recording it. Thanks for your devotion to the fans, we'd love to see you in Raleigh!
Much love, Laurie
Dear Laurie,
Thanks for your letter!
I've been a big David Bowie fan my whole (music) life. But we have not yet collaborated. You never know.....
Rock hard!

A Big Hello to you Joan,
I currently have almost every thing you have done with the BLACKHEARTS on vinal an cassette. I am now trying to get it all on CD, however it is very difficult to do. I have been searching for Bad Reputation and Glourious Results of a Misspent Youth and can only find them on E-Bay an Amazon.Com. Their asking prices are so high that I would have to pawn my CD player to get them. Your website lists them as out of stock. My question is are they ever going to be in stock or should I take a second job and save to buy them off e-bay?
Your fan for life
Gary
Dear Gary,
No, don't get a second job for that!!! We will re-issue soon. We're working out new distribution. Kenny will soon announce when. Maybe write to the fan club (jettfc@aol.com) and send your address to David Snowden in case we come across something we can send you.
Keep rockin hard!

Hi Joan!
Question: If you could put 3 bands/artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based on your favoritism....who would they be?
Funny story: I have 3 boys ages 8, 5, and 1. Last summer, I had to be the only person in America with two little kids arguing whether to play JOAN JETT or KISS on the CD player in the van. My wife and I got quite a kick out of their argument. By the way.....JOAN JETT won out, and they were still both happy to be singing "I love rock and roll". Hope the kids can meet you someday.
Have a great spring.
Ron in NW Indiana
Dear Ron,
Thanks for your question, although I'm not great at these questions, ranking things. My answer would be 1. The RUNAWAYS 2. The RUNAWAYS 3. The RUNAWAYS.
Tell your kids "hi" and thanks for picking me!!!
Rock on all!

Ask Joan Question? What should I ask - I have so many! I am a huge JJ fan and have been for my entire life - my question is? - When can we expect to seen JJ next on the big screen - what is the next JJ movie role in the pipeline. PS. loved Light of Day and Boogie Boy.
Ta.
The last I heard about the movie "The Sweet Life", in which I have a role, is coming out in early summer, but beyond that, I do not know.
Thanks

Hey Joan,
I'm a 17 year old girl and I'm originally from South Africa, but I've been living in Canada for nearly three years now, and I'm absolutely in awe of your talent. I've been playing guitar since I was seven years old and I live for it. I just want to thank you for putting your music out there; you've inspired me in so many ways and your music has fed my passion for guitar playing.
Now for my question - I'm just wondering what strings you prefer to use, and what your dream guitar is?
Lastly - Please come to Vancouver! PLEASE! I'd be the happiest girl ever if I saw you in concert!
Have a great day, and thank you so much for your time and all the musical goodness =)
Take Care,
Meaghan
Dear Meaghan,
Thanks for your letter and the great question! I'm not sure about the spelling offhand, but I usually use D'Addario electric guitar strings, gauge .o10.
Sometimes I'll use a heavier gauge on lower strings, but it depends. As far as a dream guitar, I don't know that I have one. I love my Melody Makers. That's about as good as it gets for me. Older Melody Makers.
Rock till ya drop!

Hey!
I am a major fan from Dallas, Texas. I love your music, and think it is great that you had an all girl band back in the 70s. My mom is the one who really LOVES you (she's even thinking of getting a black heart tattooed on her leg), she's been a fan for close to 20 years and she's only 33. I am 13 and I'm just w..., my mom and I were wondering if there will be a behind-the-seens movie (maybe even a copy of the broadway RHPS? Thanx alot!!!!
Hey major fan from Dallas, TX
Your mom should get a tattoo, if that's what she wants to do. In response to your question about the "Rocky" Broadway show, as far as I know, they did not film anything that they could make a movie from. No backstage stuff, or the making of, that I know about. Sorry...
Rock on !

Hi Joan,
Been joanzin to see you play so hopefully we can make it to the Cincinnati show. Well my question is how would an unsigned band be able to tour with the BLACKHEARTS? I know it's an off the wall question but what the heck. I've been a die hard fan it seems like forever and always wanted to do at least a show with my favorite band of all time. Maybe one day it could happen, if it is destiny.... Rock On! Love ya Joan.......
Wild One
Lorrilyle
Dear Lorrilyle,
Thanks for your letter. Send a tape or CD to the Blackheart office, Attention Joan/Kenny and hey, ya never know. No promises, but something could always come up. Thanks again and rock hard!

Dear Joan,
I have been a fan for along time, I love your music, I really like the songs you have redone like Love Hurts, and Crimson and Clover, what made you pick these songs to do. I really like your version. I do have one personal question for you, I love your 80's look, the long black hair, the way it looked on you. Why did you cut your hair so short, and die it so light. I had breast cancer and lost all my hair, and I truly hated my hair so short and pretty bald, and it is taking so long to grow back. I just wanted to know if you just like short hair or if you had a personal reason for doing it. thank you for your time.
kimmy ann
Dear Kimmy Ann,
Thank you for your question. I hope you are feeling much better, and I can truly appreciate your point of view. I will tell you a story.......
I had that shag hairstyle since I started in The RUNAWAYS, and the black followed a couple months into the band. Fast forward 15 years. Now I've had that hair my whole professional life, and flipping through one of many rock mags at the time, mistook myself and the BLACKHEARTS for Motley Crue. Mostly, myself, and Nikki Sixx, who had a black shag like mine, and wore heavy black make-up, kinda like mine. Right then and there, I decided to cut my hair. It had become a joke, and was no longer special or different. It had been coming anyway, that was just the last straw, and that wasn't the only band that had "the hair." It was becoming the new style for some boys in bands. So that's the lowdown on that change. I like my hair now and am very comfortable with the way I look. For the moment. Who knows?
Thanks again, be well and keep rockin'!!!

Hey Joan,
First of all, let me apologize if this is a duplicate message, I've had trouble with my email and don't know if it's gone through.
I just wanted to drop you a line and wish you a happy 20th anniversary. It's probably not marked on your calendar as it is mine, but back on May 10, 1983, my mom was kind enough (and cool enough) to take me to see you here in Huntington, WV. As I recall, Ricky had broken a rib or something (?) and Kenny was filling in on keys, vocals, and handclaps. Extremely cool! Do you recall this? Did you need to do many shows like this?
Anyway, I've been fortunate enough to have seen you many times since but have never been able to meet you. In honor of our anniversary, I'll be making about a 7 hour pilgrimage to Sandusky, OH to see you. Any chance I might be able finally meet you after all this time?
If not, you can just buy me something or fling a little sweat my way.
See you in May,
Alex
Dear Alex,
I don't recall the exact show, but I do remember Ricky being hurt and us having to adjust. Don't remember how many shows though. We've done some shows like that through the years.
I'm sure we could meet this year. And get in front for the sweat!
Thanks for your letter.
Keep Rockin'!
