The roots of rock How pop stars set trends with their cutting-edge hairdos
from: sfgate.com
by: James Sullivan
"Rock 'n' roll hair, wow," says JOAN JETT on the forthcoming A&E special "Uncut: The True Story of Hair." "It's, like, you know it when you see it."
Rock 'n' roll, and pop and hip-hop, have inspired nearly every trendy haircut (particularly among men) of the past 40 years. Punk, rockabilly, the British Invasion, achy-breaky country music: Just as every style of pop music has its heyday and then its periodic revivals, so do the radical haircuts we've come to associate with them.
Like DJs, in recent years stylists and their most adventurous customers have been sampling everything that came before.
Here, with commentary from Jennifer Hofmann of Glama-Rama!, are a few snippets:
THE SHAG
Now: The Hives' Pelle Almqvist
Then: Mick Jagger
Style notes: " 'Shattered,' or textured. Strong geometric shapes. Some guys are getting this cut teased up through the crown, like Ron Wood or Rod Stewart.
It's all the same '60s stuff."
THE MOHAWK
Now: Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder
Then: Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver"
Style notes: "Still considered the 'bad' cut." Variation: the "fauxhawk" or "fin" (unshaved but piled to a point on top -- "last year's Bumble & Bumble collection").
THE MULLET
Now: Billy Ray Cyrus impersonator Rocci Trillo
Then: Billy Ray Cyrus
Style notes: "I saw a girl with a real good one the other day. It looked real cute."
THE DREADLOCK
Now: P.O.D.'s Sonny
Then: Bob Marley
Style notes: Sometimes enhanced with extensions. "It's a commitment -- We have one (stylist) who specializes in dreads."
THE BUTCHER
Now: Sum 41's Deryck (Bizzy D)
Then: Sid Vicious
Style notes: "An easy cut to do and maintain. The sleepy, boy-out-of-bed look, when in reality they probably spent a lot of time on it."
THE NATURAL
Now: Lenny Kravitz
Then: Buddy Miles
Style notes: "The Sly Stone look -- totally! A couple years ago Japanese kids were getting their hair permed into Afros."
THE NEW WAVE
Now: Pink
Then: Wendy O. Williams
Style notes: "Pinks and purples -- maybe it was just in San Francisco, but in the last few years people went nuts with color."
