Concertgoers love rock 'n' roll -- and U.S.

College students played hacky sack. Shirtless, sunburned guys ate turkey legs, and couples sat together on blankets. Everybody was drinking beer. It was another big rock 'n' roll show at Auditorium Shores on Sunday.
But KLBJ's "Shore Thang," the first big concert in town since Tuesday's terror, was anything but a normal event. The crowd pushed up front and pounded their fists, but in many of their hands were flags.
Red, white and blue were everywhere during that rare rock concert that opened with the Army color guard playing "The Star-Spangled Banner," followed by the Bells of Joy, a local gospel group.
The crowd, estimated at about 8,000 by the time the headlining Black Crowes were set to hit the stage, did not turn out for reflection. They wanted to rock, and in their unbridled exuberance they became the show.
"I wasn't sure I would be in the mood to party," said Eric Pesek of Austin, cocking back an oversized beaker of beer. "But just being around all these people, listening to music, is a great form of stress relief."
Andy Sowa of Round Rock said he was just glad to be outside after five days of watching TV in disbelief. "I really needed this," he said.
Afternoon highlight JOAN JETT, who showed up at New York's Kennedy Airport four hours early Sunday morning to make sure she got a flight out, came onstage to a recording of "Over There," the patriotic number from World War I.
"So prepare, say a prayer/Send the word, send the word to beware," said the song about sending troops, as the audience went nuts and sang the chorus: "We'll be over, we're coming over/And we won't come back till it's over, over there."
For a few minutes, George M. Cohan was a rock crowd's favorite songwriter.
