On Stage and Off: Drum and Bugle Brotherhood Counting Empty Seats
from: nytimes.com
Broadway began to eat its own this week as a crush of new shows punished several other recently opened productions.
The numbers were numbing. At the Ambassador Theater, "A Class Act" was averaging 260 people a night, a decent audience off Broadway but a scarily skimpy crowd for a theater seating more than 1,100 people. At the Longacre "Judgment at Nuremberg" was suffering, playing to 36 percent capacity. On Wednesday the cast unanimously voted not to activate a contract clause that would have assured a higher pay rate, a move that may make it easier for producers to make a go of it.
Other productions feeling the pinch were "Jane Eyre," playing under 50 percent as well; "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe," with grosses below $100,000; and "The Rocky Horror Show," which played to 61 percent.
In another "Rocky" development, the show will apparently be keeping JOAN JETT for a while. In a release, Judy Jacksina, a spokeswoman for "Rocky Horror," said the producers had learned on Monday that Ms. Jett was leaving between mid-May and mid-June. Later, however, Ms. Jett and her management "had a change of heart and are considering staying through the summer."
