Concert Review: JOAN JETT Mystic Lake showroom May 20, 2017
from: RockSteadyDigitalImages

low resolution image Not Enlargeable I'm not really sure where to start in reviewing this show. I definitely am biased because I've been a fan of JOAN JETT's since she was with the RUNAWAYS back in the 1970s. I have seen her a dozen times since she's been solo. Last night was the first time I had seen her in quite some time. It's amazing how some artists that you really enjoy have a tendency to come at the worst possible times when you're either out of town or busy doing something else.

When I saw she was coming to Mystic Lake, I promised myself I would not miss it. JOAN JETT epitomizes to me what rock 'n roll is all about. She has the spirit and the music to back it up. Music like anything else is cyclical and things change over time. I certainly understand why the younger generation loves artists like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Britney Spears. They say certain artists speak for a generation. JOAN JETT seems to speak for many generations.

Her songs are very catchy, melodic and I love the straight-forward punch the way only she seems to be able to deliver it. Her band the BLACKHEARTS have changed members over the years, but she always puts the right musicians together to continue the spirit of what that band is. Unlike many other artists, she never loses sight of her music. It's the streetwise sounding musicians that lean towards rock 'n roll that help make her band so incredible. Many times you go and see an artist who hires a bunch of musicians that are session musicians to tour with them. Nothing wrong with the technical skill of those musicians but they miss a rawness when playing those songs live. The BLACKHEARTS in one word were stellar in their performance last night.

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Perhaps she's one of the best kept secrets in rock 'n roll. She did all of the hits that you would expect her to do and even some deep cuts off of early albums. She opened up with "Victim Of Circumstance" which is off of her huge 1982 release, "I Love Rock 'n Roll" album. That was the first surprise but the highlight of the evening for me was when she did "Light Of Day" (written by Bruce Springsteen) off the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. Songs from her recent release, "Unvarnished" were just as enjoyable as the ones that were oh so familiar. She also treated the audience to the Mary Tyler Moore theme song, "Love Is All Around" (recorded for the NY Liberty Woman’s Baseball team). Jett is a standout in the music business and one to be appreciated. They don't make them like JOAN JETT anymore, perhaps if they did music would be in a better place than it is right now.

Mike DelGuidice talks JOAN JETT, Chris Cornell and Pink Tie event
from: digitaljournal.com

Woodbury - On May 20, Mike DelGuidice of the Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot sat down and chatted with me about playing with JOAN JETT at Nassau Coliseum, remembering Chris Cornell and the Pink Tie event in Woodbury.

DelGuidice is also a part of Billy Joel's live touring band, and on April 5, at Joel's inaugural concert at the newly-renovated Nassau Coliseum, they shared the stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer JOAN JETT, where they sang two of her hits including "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." "I love JOAN JETT," DelGuidice exclaimed. "She is an icon, and I was playing her music when I was a kid. We used to sing all of her songs 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll,' 'Crimson & Clover' and 'I Hate Myself for Loving You' in a band when I was a kid. I love her."

The Big Shot front-man had nothing but the greatest words about the late Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave. "It was a horrible loss of one of the best voices," he said. Speaking of Cornell, DelGuidice's two favorite songs of his were "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman," both of which were Grammy-winning tunes. "There was something about his voice in 'Black Hole Sun'," he said, and ironically enough, Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" is a song about death.

Finally, DelGuidice spoke highly about the fifth annual Pink Tie event, which will take place on May 22 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. This year's event will feature Scott Stapp from the rock band Creed as its special musical guest. "We had the good fortune to play last year. It's an amazing event, where so many people come together. It is one big Long Island hospitality party. It is going to be a lot of fun," DelGuidice said.

For more information on tomorrow's Pink Tie event on Long Island, check out its official website and the Pink Tie Facebook page.

JOAN JETT on set in North Merrick
Long Island film tackles addiction through story of aging cop

from: liherald.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable 'Dinosaur' is a dramatic thriller that follows aging police officer John Halmo and his efforts to snuff out an impending biker war. Directed by Fred Carpenter, Produced by MaryAnn Gianninno and starring Ed Asner, Robert Clohessy and JOAN JETT.

JOAN JETT stands in a bathroom and clutches her face, focusing on her reflection in a wall mirror. When the director shouts action she becomes Stephanie, a wife and mother who is struggling with the disease of addiction. Stephanie had just finished rummaging through her cabinet to find multiple empty pill bottles. She screams for her husband, George, played by Broadway actor Ciaran Sheehan, who runs in after her. 'Look in the mirror,' he shouts. 'Who is that girl? I can't find you anymore.'

Jett and Sheehan play a couple whose story figures into the central plot of the film 'Dinosaur,' which is currently in production at several locations across Long Island. The scene above was shot on May 12 at the North Merrick home of Trish Appello, Secretary of the Long Island TV/Film Foundation.

'Dinosaur' is a dramatic thriller that follows aging police officer John Halmo and his efforts to snuff out an impending biker war. 'What's interesting is that it's a day in the life of one person, but you meet so many others along the way,' said Byron Clohessy, who plays officer Danny and is known for multiple short films and an appearance in the CBS show 'Blue Bloods.'

The domestic dispute between Jett and Sheehan's characters is one of the many issues Halmo must deal with throughout the course of the film. Co-producer and co-writer Edward Wahl is a Nassau County police officer who based the character on his retired partner of the same name.

Wahl said that he wanted to capture 'what's happening on Long Island and throughout the country right now.' He added that he has seen multiple individuals struggling with opioid addiction, has revived individuals with naloxone and saw the same individuals relapse. 'Once you start [using], there's a good chance you are going to die,' he said.

Sheehan said that the role hit close to home, explaining that he recently lost a close friend of his son, who overdosed and died. When it came to approaching the character of George, Sheehan said that he always explores how a role relates to love. 'Both of these characters are dealing with their own wounds,' he said. 'The fear of losing [Stephanie] puts me at wits end.'

8 Most Influential Punk Rock Bands in History
from: topcount.co

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Punk Rock has become a Subculture that is solely circled around the principle of Non-conformity. It might not use the right words or say the right things, but the punk culture did speak a lot about politics.

As the Far right takes over, there's general unrest and the war in Syria, the punk music might just become relevant again. So, I thought it's important to know where it all began.

Here are the 8 most influential and iconic Punk Acts in the history of Rock n' roll.

Ramones
This band was leading the punk movement of the 70s in the United States. The New York-based group didn't achieve a lot of commercial success but were a huge influence on the punk movement. Their 1977 album "Rocket to Russia" is specifically famous for its anti-establishment theme and an overwhelmingly political content. Though a lot of their music did not age very well and is forgotten in some circles; they still remain the band to inspire the next punk movement.

JOAN JETT
The only female voice on this list (unfortunately), JOAN JETT has been an icon of rebellion since the 1970s. If you were even remotely interested in punk rock music, you couldn't avoid the raw and rebellious lyrics and the energetic voice of JOAN JETT. With hits like "Cherry Bomb" (1976) and "Bad Reputation" (1981), JOAN JETT remains the icon of a woman who is determined to do what she wants, especially if it's against the norms of Society.

The Misfits
The misfits used to perform on the themes of something they called "horror punk". The band's iconic style of mixing punk and blues rock influences with themes of dark and horror movies or stories is what earned them their fame in the 80s. Nothing impacted the punk world like their 1996 album "Static Age" where they drastically changed their thematic approach and made their music even more political.

Grammys to Return to New York City in 2018
from: jambands.com

The Grammys have officially announced that their 60th annual ceremony will take place at New York's Madison Square Garden in 2018, returning to the city for the first time since 2003 after being held at Los Angeles' Staples Center since 2004, Billboard reports.

Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, and Julie Menin, the recently appointed commissioner of the New York Mayor's Office of Media, both spoke with Billboard on their combined efforts to bring the Grammys back to New York.

"It had always been something I had thought was of interest to us; it was really all about the details," Portnow says. "And given that this is an anniversary year for us, it's a special chance to celebrate."

For her part, Menin gathered a committee of organizations to help with the switch to MSG (which hosted the Grammys in 1997 and 2003), as the move from LA would cost the Recording Academy up to $6.5 million. She also spoke on the non-Grammy ongoings that New York will host around the ceremony.

"There will of course be the many Grammy-related events that happen in and around the city, and we're really focused on inclusion and access," Menin says. "There are a limited number of people that attend the awards themselves, and then of course many millions of people who watch the event on TV, but we're really focused also on celebrating music in general in New York City."

For the announcement, the Grammys released a "New York City of Music" video with Spike Lee about the rich musical history of New York, including appearances from A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, Nile Rogers, Tony Bennet, JOAN JETT, Cyndi Lauper, Grandmaster Flash and more.

Ken Phillips talks 20 year anniversary with PR firm, JOAN JETT SPECIAL
from: digitaljournal.com

World renowned entertainment publicist Ken Phillips has a major reason to be proud. He's celebrating the 20-year anniversary of his independent public relations firm, the Ken Phillips Publicity Group, Inc.

The esteemed publicist launched Ken Phillips Publicity Group, Inc. in May of 1997. Ever since, Phillips has created and implemented countless publicity campaigns for nationally known acts over his 20 plus year career including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Capital Cities, Margaret Cho, rock queen JOAN JETT, Dave Navarro, Godsmack, Switchfoot, Hanson, Cheap Trick, Goo Goo Dolls, Jonas Brothers, James Durbin (from American Idol) and the multi-platinum-selling and Grammy award-winning a cappella group Pentatonix.

"It feels fantastic to be celebrating 20 years with the Ken Phillips Publicity Group," he said. "I'm very grateful to have worked with and continue to work with such outstanding talent in this ever-changing business."

Most impressive about Mr. Phillips is that he signed rock superstar JOAN JETT as his first PR client. "I first met JOAN JETT when I was a publicist at Warner Bros. Records. When I branched off with my own company in 1997, she was the first artist to sign on with us for representation. Joan was already a superstar in 1997 and it's been nothing short of amazing to see her still thriving 20 years later, and to watch her become the icon she truly truly is. She lives and breathes rock 'n' roll. It's who she is inside and out."

Regarding his plans for the future, Phillips said, "Our company plans for the future are simple: to keep providing the personal hands-on dedicated PR services we always have for our clients. Oh, and to one day hopefully work with Green Day, Lady Gaga or The Foo Fighters."

JOAN JETT to perform at the Nebraska State Fair
from: kfvs12.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable (KFVS) - Let's turn back the clock and check out the music scene from the first week of May, 1982.

Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 had Rick Springfield at number five with Don't Talk to Strangers. At the time, Springfield had the role of Dr. Noah Drake on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. Don't Talk to Strangers was the 3rd of his five top-ten hits from 1981 to 1984.

It was just a couple of weeks ago, guitarist J.Geils passed away. In 1982, his J. Geils Band was experiencing the peak of its popularity. The title cut from their album Freeze Frame was in the number three spot. It was a follow up to their number one hit Centerfold from earlier in the year.

Two mega-stars from the 1960's and 70's teamed up for a duet holding down the number three position. Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder recorded Ebony and Ivory live in the studio together, but due to schedule conflicts they had to record the video separately. For McCartney, it was his 28th song to hit the top spot on the Hot 100.

A movie theme was in the number two spot. Chariots of Fire was an instrumental by Greek composer Vangelis. It was from the movie of the same name and went on to become a number one hit. To this date it is the only chart topper by a Greek artist.

But in the top spot this week in '82 was a rock anthem of the 80's. I Love Rock 'N Roll spent seven weeks at number one. The song was originally released by a group called The Arrows back in 1975 and was a minor hit. But seven years later it became a monster hit for JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS. The black and white video was one of the most played videos in the early days of MTV. The song ranks number 56 on Billboard's Greatest Hits of All Time.
