JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS definitely Love Rock 'n' Roll

Rating: 5 stars
The wait is over. The one show that many of us wanted to see did not disappoint in the least. Sunday night, The Hudson Gardens And Event Center welcomed with open arms to their remodeled outdoor venue, the new inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS. For a bit, it looked like the weather might turn a little wet, but it did not stop the fans from filling the venue to capacity. The rocker who is originally from Philadelphia and now resides in New York gave it her all and did not leave anything behind.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS performed for over an hour-and-a-half- and prior to the show greeted some 60 fans with a very personable meet and greet. After the meet and greet was completed, she invited the photographer and another man to join her in a photo op as well saying "You two have worked this crowd and you deserve some recognition too. And with that, I would be honored to have my photo taken with you two. This is the kind of lady JOAN JETT is. She is personable, kind, generous and above all, she can pack a venue and for good reason. There is nothing like some good old rock 'n' roll.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS performed many of the old songs, 'I Love Rock N' Roll', 'Crimson And Clover', Bad Reputation, I Hate Myself For Loving You, Do You Wanna Touch Me, and she performed some newer ones as well. You Drive Me Wild, Activity Grrl, Stylistically, the new songs fit in with the rest of her catalog of great rock. And she is always smiling while on stage and just truly loving her job and having a blast on stage. And the fans feed of this. They were rocking the entire night.

When speaking to many fans waiting in line and meeting many once they had gotten into the venue and found their spots, the energy was high, the smiles were many and the same though was on everyone's mind. "This is the show I have waited for since the schedule was put out". The Examiner had a chance to speak with some of the fans. Mike Medina from Highlands Ranch said, "I have been in love with this lady for a long time. She can sing, she can play the guitar and best of all Ð she can rock." Toni Gold was too excited and all she could say is "I cannot believe I am here." This was a birthday gift from a few of her friends who did not tell her where they were going. They went to lunch, had a little birthday celebration, and then as they put it, "it was time to get the night rocking".

From the very young (5 years old) to the older (no age limit), JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS had a great show for everyone. Even the Director for The Hudson Gardens And Event Center said this is one of the largest crowds he has seen at a show. As the show wrapped upped and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS had left the venue, the line to purchase any memorabilia was long. At one point, it looked to be about 300 fans waiting in line to purchase anything they could.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS had rocked and the memories will remain. And the lady proved that there are still great people in Rock music who enjoy treating their fans with respect. From the Examiner and The Hudson Gardens And Event Center, from all the fans, we would all like to say Thank You to a wonderful lady and her band for giving a great performance.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS Concert Review - Hudson Gardens (Littleton)
from: 995themountain.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Before last night, I'd only seen JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS live in concert once before when she opened for Def Leppard in 2000. Vocalist Joe Elliott went on record saying Jett was the best opening act Leppard ever had. In the last 15 years, JOAN JETT has risen from opening act to executive producer for the 2010 film The RUNAWAYS, which chronicled The RUNAWAYS' career, to 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

Jett (real name Joan Marie Larkin) delivered a well-balanced set to a huge crowd at Littleton's Hudson Gardens. Opening with "Bad Reputation" and "Cherry Bomb," The BLACKHEARTS came out swinging with a ferocious punk attitude. Colorado fans quickly got their first vocal workout of the evening singing "Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah" over and over again during Gary Glitter's glam classic "Do You Wanna Touch Me".

Next up was "Light Of Day," the memorable title track from a forgettable 1987 movie starring Jett and Michael J. Fox. The chorus always reminded me a little of "On The Dark Side" off the Eddie And The Cruisers soundtrack (another box office flop.)

After this string of hits, Jett dipped down into some deeper tracks including "Love Is Pain" from I Love Rock 'N' Roll and "Fake Friends," the lead track off Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth.

Joan's biggest hit "I Love Rock And Roll" predictably brought the fans to their feet, but I give Jett props for inserting several straight ahead rockers from her most recent studio album, 2013's Unvarnished.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS at Hudson Gardens (review)
from: heyreverb.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT and her band the BLACKHEARTS (drummer THOMMY PRICE, guitarist DOUGIE NEEDLES and bassist Hal Selzer), performed an excellent hour and a half set at the scenic Hudson Gardens on Sunday. The pleasantly rain-free evening show saw a reverent crowd spread out over the lawn who cheered and sang along to a set full of the favorites as well as some choice new tracks.

Recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the 56-year-old remains a spitfire on stage. Clad in tight black leather, slashing at her guitar, Jett still perfectly delivered her vocals in the defiant sneer of a hungry young rocker.

The band hit the ground running with three classics in a row, the raucous "Bad Reputation" followed by the iconic RUNAWAYS hit "Cherry Bomb" and Jett's badass reworking of Gary Glitter's "Do You Want To Touch Me?"

They followed with numbers from her latest LP "Unvarnished" before digging further into her back catalog to rock out on hits like the Bruce Springsteen-penned "Light of Day" (from the 1987 movie starring Jett and Michael J. Fox), "Fake Friends," as well as the first song she ever wrote, the RUNAWAYS rocker "You Drive Me Wild."

Throughout the evening, Jett continually worked to amp up the crowd, leading them though both sing alongs and offering brief backstories to her songs Ñ for example explaining the history behind the Dave Grohl songwriting collaboration "Any Weather."

Wrapping up the set strong with her huge hits "I Love Rock n' Roll," "Crimson and Clover" and "I Hate Myself For Loving You," Jett left the crowd up and out of their lawn chairs cheering for more.

The band returned for an encore highlighted by Jett's raucous workout of the rockabilly classic "Real Wild Child (Wild One)" and her take on Sly Stone's classic "Everyday People" to round out an early evening that left it pretty safe to say that JOAN JETT still loves rock and roll.

USE YOUR VOICE: JOAN JETT
from: papermag.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Nine living legends of music, the causes they believe in and the worlds they envision. Welcome to PAPER's Use Your Voice portfolio. Get ready to get inspired.

Her love of rock 'n' roll is arguably a moral imperative in itself, but recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee JOAN JETT is also an inveterate supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA). We were lucky enough to get a moment with Joan during her Use Your Voice photo shoot on Long Island. Below, she talks about her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, her friendship with Miley and her personal definition of rock 'n' roll.

So, Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. You're on tour with the Who. You're at the top! Where do you go from there?
It's been a great year, really wonderful, and it feels like I'm achieving what I set out to do -- I know that I'm achieving what I set out to do, but that other people are noticing, and not just other musicians or fans, but the business, and so that was sort of startling: to finally realize that some people are really recognizing me. It was emotionally overwhelming 'cause I've fought for so long and so hard just to be in a band and be taken seriously, you know, which you don't think is gonna be a big deal, but it had been all these years. And the tour with the Who is incredible because they helped the BLACKHEARTS get our start. We couldn't get signed in the beginning, and we had music to make and I was working with Kenny, and Kenny had worked with the Who for years. We were kind of in a spot, and the Who basically said, "Go record, do what you gotta do, pay us when you can," and that album was Bad Reputation. So really they enabled us to get a start without having to resort to signing a terrible record deal, and it was really amazing of see it come full circle now.

You felt like you weren't getting that recognition until recently?
Well yeah. It's hard to talk about... I try to have humility about what goes on. You can't do anything without the fans, but also you can't get heard without radio stations, without magazines writing about you, without all these things. We didn't have a lot of that because we didn't have the big labels, and the fact that we did things on our own and had success with it -- we had 23 record labels, major and minor, listen to "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Crimson and Clover," "Do You Wanna Touch Me," "Bad Reputation" and one other song, and all of them said, "There's no hits here, lose the guitar," -- when we then went and did it ourselves from the street, when DJ's used to still be able to play the music they wanted and we had some friends in the Northeast that would play our records, and it was this groundswell between the radio and the fans and then media starting to take note. And then we have this huge number one record with a song that everybody laughed at, so to me it felt like the industry was saying, "Way to go! Now do it again without our help." The fact is, we did it and we survived, and all these years I felt like people had that attitude of, You did it on your own; you don't need help from us and we're not gonna help you. I don't know if anything shifted on any kind of major level, but when you have a lot in the industry, whoever was there, standing up for you, and it's instigated I heard by people like Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, you feel good about that, you know?

That's as good of a recognition as you could possibly get, the Who and the Beatles.
Totally. I remember being in my bedroom and listening to Paul McCartney's first solo album, and it's so freaky the way things, you know, move around. I remember, right after forming the RUNAWAYS, getting to hang out with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page and them wearing RUNAWAYS shirts and thinking, Damn man, literally three years ago I'm in my room getting yelled at by my dad going, "What the fuck is that?" It feels like a fantasy life, so I just kind of roll with what the rock 'n' roll gods bring me.

You had all this help early on from all these icons. Now that you're in that position, do you feel the need to mentor people? I know you're friends with Miley; do you see yourself in the role of the mentor?
I feel kind of like that's not humble if I say "Oh yeah I'm the mentor." I think that, yes, if you've got something to impart to people, certainly I would love to tell people what I know -- if they want to know. I think that the friendship Miley and I have struck up is born out of genuine... from what I can tell, that she's a fan. She told me she auditioned for Hannah Montana to "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me?" I first met her the year that Oprah was going off TV. I think it was 2011. So she was having a few people on, Miley being one of them. And Miley was supposed to pick someone she looks up to, to sing with, and she chose me. We sang a couple songs on Oprah and from then on we've just kind of been friends. She's much more into rock 'n' roll than people know. As a fan, she listens to a lot of varied music; I think people would be surprised at the variety that she listens to.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON: Foo Fighters to rock out at RFK Stadium on July 4th
from: foxdc.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable WASHINGTON - Despite a broken leg suffered by frontman Dave Grohl a few weeks ago, the Foo Fighters will perform in Washington D.C. as scheduled on Saturday for their 20th anniversary celebration at RFK Stadium.

The highly anticipated concert will also feature Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, LL Cool J featuring DJ Z-Trip, Trouble Funk, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue and RDGLDGRN. Many of the performers were featured in the Foo Fighters' HBO documentary series "Sonic Highways."

The Fourth of July event will also have fireworks, a barbecue and a motorcycle rally.

Grohl was injured during a fall onstage during a performance in Sweden. He received treatment and ended up finishing up that show. But his injury required surgery and the band had to cancel the rest of their European tour.

But it will be a full go in D.C., according to the Foo Fighters' Twitter account.

75,000 pack into Memorial Park for '80s jams, fireworks and a whole lotta fun
from: omaha.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable "She's the one who sings 'I Love Rock 'N Roll,' right?" Liz Orrick said to her friend Carmella Briganti as they sat waiting for JOAN JETT to take the stage.

They had been waiting for hours Friday to see the 25th annual Bank of the West Celebrates America concert at Memorial Park, featuring Eddie Money and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, along with Bonne Finken + The Collective and a 20-minute fireworks show.

Briganti got to the park at 5 a.m. to reserve her usual spot on the hill. She used caution tape to mark a territory big enough for American flag lawn chairs, coolers, two umbrellas, snacks, four blankets and six friends.

"I've been here every year since it began," said Briganti, who took the day off from work. "The music is fun, and the people are fun."

When Jett, who with the BLACKHEARTS was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, took the stage after Eddie Money, she opened with two classic hits, "Bad Reputation" and "Cherry Bomb."

JOAN JETT may have a movie about her early years in the RUNAWAYS and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but she's still a counterculture icon.

"I'm still that punk rock girl I always was," she told The World-Herald.

Jett was inducted into the Rock Hall in April; she thinks it's a tribute to how she's never stopped working.

"I've never really taken a vacation or time way from the road since I started in the RUNAWAYS, which was a long time ago," Jett said. "I'm always doing something."

On Friday, she'll bring hits such as "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "I Love Rock 'n Roll" and "Bad Reputation" to Memorial Park for the annual Bank of the West Celebrates America free concert.

She'll also perform songs from her latest album, "Unvarnished," which includes songs written with Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!

"It was a great experience to work with two people that I consider friends and look up to as musicians and writers," she said.

JETT PLAYS A HARD ROCKING SET FOR MIAMI, OK
from: midwestmusicscene.net

low resolution image Not Enlargeable 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, rocked Miami, OK recently bringing their brand of three chord rock and roll that never goes out of style. Joan is still proving that girls can rock just as hard as the boys do and her rock anthems "Bad Reputation", "Cherry Bomb" and "I Love Rock 'n Roll" are still standing the test of time and reaching a whole new generation.

Fresh off the first leg of The Who's 50th anniversary tour, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS played a hard rocking 18 song set for the Oklahoma crowd. The band kicked off the set perfectly with the high energy hit "Bad Reputation" which fired up the fans and brought them rushing to the front of the stage. Guitarist DOUGIE NEEDLES was making his impressive mid-air jumps during the second song, "Cherry Bomb", while Joan came to the edge of the stage to greet the fans, playing her low slung guitar like a bad ass. "Hello daddy, hello mom, I'm your ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch cherry bomb" is just one of the brilliant lyrical hooks written by Jett in her first band The RUNAWAYS, still as current today as it was in 1976. Dave Grohl recently performed the song with Jett at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony adding his own raspy, sand paper growl to the verses.

The band played all of the older hits including "Light Of Day" which Joan told the audience was written for her by Bruce Springsteen for the movie she starred in with Michael J. Fox. In 2013 JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS released their 11th full length studio album titled Unvarnished which was represented heavily in the set with five tracks including the heavy guitar riff oriented "Fragile", "Any Weather" written with Dave Grohl and "Make It Back" which Jett explained was about Hurricane Sandy that devastated her home town and inspired her to write the song.

I have to mention the impressive powerhouse drumming by THOMMY PRICE that drives the Blackheart sound, especially on the stand out track "I Hate Myself For Loving You" which closed out the night along with the monster hits "I Love Rock 'n Roll" and "Crimson & Clover". The band returned to the stage for a 2 song encore of "Real Wild Child" and "Everyday People" and Joan introduced the band which also includes new bassist Hal Selzer and keyboardist KENNY LAGUNA. JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will be playing headline dates throughout the summer before heading out on the second leg of The Who's 50th anniversary tour this fall.

Ronda Rousey on JOAN JETT's 'Bad Reputation'
from: wsj.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Martial-arts star Ronda Rousey on the JOAN JETT song that defines her gritty attitude in the ring.

Ronda Rousey, 28, is the Ultimate Fighting Championship's mixed martial-arts bantamweight champion and the author, with her sister, Maria Burns Ortiz, of "My Fight/Your Fight," a memoir (Regan Arts). She spoke with Marc Myers.

Lots of professional fighters want their walkout song to sound like the "Rocky" theme-you know, regal and inspiring. I'm more on the theatrical side, so I needed something gritty, with a lot of attitude.

Many people are just beginning to understand the female fighter. For me, fighting is an act of overcoming. I've always been told I was destined for greatness, that I was meant to change the world. There are lots of ways to be great, but a fight is the only place where everything makes sense to me. It's almost calming.

My walkout theme used to be "Sex and Violence" by the Exploited, a Scottish punk band. It's loud and brash, and the title's words are pretty much it for the song's lyrics. Then in 2011, I was fighting with Strikeforce, a mixed martial arts organization, when Showtime wanted to air my bout on its late-night premium channel. That was a big break, but Showtime thought my song was inappropriate.

Rock On, Queens of Noise: 10 MORE Killer Heavy Metal Frontwomen
from: vh1.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable From JOAN JETT to Lzzy Hale, let us now praise 10 more all-time great heavy metal front-women.

Recently, VH1 Classic saluted Iron Maidens: 10 All-Time Great Heavy Metal Front-Women, and the response was so thunderous, we decided we had to follow-up with another tribute to regal female metal might.

Of course, any proper homage to music's most extreme queens must also include mighty bows to hard rock pioneers such as Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart; along with pumped fists in honor of punk poet Patti Smith,'80s icon Pat Benatar, and even folkies on the order of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, whose innovative techniques and musicianship profoundly influenced Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, and others.

By leaping skyward from the shoulders of those giants, women in heavy metal today rock as hard, as powerfully, and with as much commanding innovation as any of their male peers. Plus they do in an endlessly expanding realm of hard-and-heavy subgenres. Without further ado, then, let us now praise 10 more all-time great heavy metal front-women.

JOAN JETT: The RUNAWAYS, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
"Dead End Justice" - The RUNAWAYS

JOAN JETT is heavy metal. JOAN JETT is also punk, new wave, hard rock, hardcore, and every other down-and-dirty, loud-and-kickass musical category you can think of. It all adds up to this remarkable woman ruling for decades nowÑlike Elvis, Lemmy, Freddie Mercury, and precious few othersÑas a true human embodiment of full-blown rock-and-roll.

What to expect from JOAN JETT's cameo in 'Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll'
from: ew.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee JOAN JETT will guest star on episode 3 of Denis Leary's Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, the actor confirmed in an interview with EW Live on Friday at the ATX Festival in Austin, Texas.

"I knew Joan because we had done some concerts together for the Michael J. Fox Foundation," Leary told host Jessica Shaw. "I had met Joan there many times. She's a good actress, obviously, she's very busy. But I just thought this is kind of perfect. She agreed to do it."

As Leary explained, the episode focuses on an Internet rumor about his character, an aging rock star who flamed out in the early '90s, having died.

"You just forget because we're in the middle of production even on that episode. We're doing another couple of things for a couple of days, and Joan shows up and we're just hanging out with JOAN JETT," Leary said. Last year, the actor posted a picture to Twitter from the set of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll with Jett front and center.

As for Jett's acting prowess, Leary said he gave her leeway "to do whatever she wanted," but that she kept improvisation to one sequence: a part where she's being interviewed.

Listen to Leary discuss Jett as well as the other rock star guests on the series, below. EW Radio's coverage of the fourth annual ATX Festival continues all weekend long on Entertainment Weekly Radio, Sirius XM channel 105, and available anytime on demand at siriusxm.com/ondemand.

JOAN JETT: These days, 'everything rocks except rock'
from: latimes.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT's cover of the Arrows' "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was a hit from the moment it arrived on the airwaves in 1982. More than 30 years later, the genre is finally proclaiming its love for her as well.

Last Saturday, HBO will air last month's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, recorded in Cleveland, that features the induction of Jett along with her band the BLACKHEARTS. It was a moment Jett describes as "unexpectedly" great.

"It was pretty overwhelming because it was a lot of industry people and, I guess from my perspective, a lot of people who didn't think I was worth much for most of my career," she says, referencing the standing ovation she received that night. "To me it felt not like vindication Ñ because that's not humble and you have to have humility in this Ñ but just a recognition of what I've done or what we've all done."

Jett began carving out a name for herself in the Los Angeles rock scene in the mid-1970s, when she started the RUNAWAYS with drummer Sandy West. Over the course of four decades, Jett has built a career as a successful solo artist and producer for artists such as Bikini Kill and the Germs, recently wrote the title track for the upcoming Catherine Hardwicke film "Miss You Already," and will appear in a film she's also producing, "Undateable John."

Miley Cyrus Declares Her Love for JOAN JETT
from: out.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable "I'm going to start off this induction with the first time I wanted to have sex with JOAN JETT," Miley told the crowd during her speech for the classic riot grrrl at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, recorded in April and will be broadcast tonight on HBO.

"We were doing Oprah together, and I go up to Joan's hotel room," Cyrus continued, launching into a story about covering up the smell of pot while sharing a conversation with her own personal Superwoman inside a hotel bathroom. "This was one of the moments in my life where I wanted to be as present [as possible] and absorb everything that she said to me," she recalled.

As a founding member of both The RUNAWAYS and The BLACKHEARTS, as well as the creator of the BLACKHEART RECORDS label, Jett was a long overdue addition to the Hall of Fame, having revolutionized the genre and paved the way for future female music artists through her defiant attitude.

"She's been the first to do many things and not just as a woman, but just as a badass babe on the planet," gushed Miley. "She was also the first major female artist to start her own record label, and that's only because all the other labels said that there wasn't a market for that kind of music."

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was all about sharing the love this week, with none other than Miley Cyrus expressing her innate appreciation for Runways and BLACKHEARTS front woman, JOAN JETT. The internet may have been more than a little disappointed when it was announced that Cyrus would be inducting punk rocker Jett into the Hall of Fame, but the former teeny bopper was not about to let other's opinions of her ruin an inaugural speech that gushed at the seams about the brilliance of ground breaker Jett.

Not one to shy away from a touch of controversy, Cyrus began her speech with a real attention grabber, "I'm going to start off this induction with the first time I wanted to have sex with JOAN JETT." She then began to relay the story of when she first met Jett backstage at the Oprah show, "We were in her bathroom and we were smoking and talking," Cyrus went on, "and I was getting to have this moment with someone that to me, is Superwoman." The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place at the Cleveland Public Hall in April and was aired on HBO on Sunday evening, May 30th.

Jett recently recorded Different with Cyrus to benefit Cyrus' new non-profit organisation, Happy Hippie Foundation. The organisation's aims are to help raise awareness for LGBT and homeless youth as well as other vulnerable minorities. Speaking about her young collaborator, Jett said in a 2011 interview that she was grateful she did not have to put up with the media attention during her youth and showed empathy for the former Disney star, "I was thinking to myself how difficult it must be to lead your life as a teenager with the amount of paparazzi and press you're surrounded by," she said. The friendship between the two women will have been firmly cemented at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as Cyrus concluded her speech with the words, 'She made her world evolve'. Fans of Jett would likely be in full agreement with Cyrus as the rocker's acknowledgement by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is often considered to be several decades overdue.

The love at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony did not stop with Cyrus and Jett however, as Beatle Paul McCartney gave a heartfelt introduction to his former band mate Ringo Starr. Starr is the last of The Beatles to be acknowledged by the Hall of Fame, with the others receiving their accolades previously as solo artists. As he presented the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Musical Excellence, McCartney said of Starr, "He just is something so special. When he's playing behind you, and you see in these other bands where they're looking around at the drummer, 'is he going to speed up? is he going to slow down?' You don't have to look with Ringo".

JOAN JETT: Rock and Roll's Great Idealist Stays Loud
from: pastemagazine.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The fan meet-and-greet at the Atlanta stop on JOAN JETT's tour with The Who is mostly what you'd imagine: She poses for pictures. They congratulate her on her recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and she humbly thanks them. Every now and then, when a fan gets bold enough to go in for a hug, she's ready with open arms. But there's one thing that makes the whole process feel just a little more JOAN JETT, something she says to each one before they walk away, looking them dead in the eyes and repeating it like a mantra:

"Get loud out there tonight."

It's a fitting message from the legendary musician, as she's never shied away from being loud herselfÑwhether it's her literal volume in her work with The RUNAWAYS, The BLACKHEARTS and her solo material; her personal style (which, to be clear, has nothing to do with her music but is hugely influential on its own); or her willingness to speak out about the injustices she's suffered as a woman in the music industry, coming up in a time when it was assumed that all rock stars would have Y-chromosomes.

But how have things changed in the nearly 40 years since The RUNAWAYS put out their debut album, if at all?

Jett lets out a little wry laugh before giving her answer. "The latter half is more like it. I think women are the ones who are changing things. Obviously with the advent of social media and YouTube and various recording apps that you can use, people are able to make their own records and put them up online for other people to hear, which I didn't have that ability when The RUNAWAYS were happening. The only way you could be heard was on radio or through records or on tour. So I think, you know, I think that's definitely a positive for women."

The Who & JOAN JETT @ Forest Hills Stadium (review, setlists)
from: brooklynvegan.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The Who wrapped up the current leg of their 50th anniversary tour last night (5/30) in Queens at Forest Hills Stadium, the same place they played in 1971 before the venue stopped hosting concerts for decades (it stopped in the late '80s and began doing so again in 2013). It was their second NYC show on the tour after Barclays Center last Tuesday (5/26) and third in the area after hitting Long Island's Nassau Coliseum the week prior. They played an excellent set, but before that happened was another excellent set from their tourmates JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS.

JOAN JETT is a pretty great opener for The Who. Like that band, she's important, influential and still sounds relevant today, but her brand of punk/hard rock surely owes a thing or two to early Who. And she had no trouble getting their crowd going. Even if you've never actively sought out her music, just about anyone who's listened to classic rock radio can sing along to "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and her version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" (which, in a stadium full of Who fans, is pretty much everyone). At the same time, we got "Cherry Bomb" and "You Drive Me Wild" off The RUNAWAYS' 1976 debut album. Maybe those had a little less of the crowd singing, but they're classics of the early punk era and Joan still delivers them with the energy they demand.

After Joan's 11-song set, The Who took things back all the way to 1965, kicking off their set with "I Can't Explain." (It was almost the same setlist as Barclays Center -- we didn't get "A Quick One.") Like Joan, or maybe more accurately like fellow early seventy-something Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey just show absolutely no sign of slowing down. Roger mentioned on stage that they might not be able to do this for much longer, but it's hard to believe him. I wasn't around to see them in the '60s/'70s, but Roger Daltrey's still prancing around and swinging his mic and Pete Townshend's still windmilling that guitar just like all the old live footage. He tends to end the show with his guitar in one piece these days though. Not every band can successfully rock a stadium, especially one with 50 years behind them and only half of their classic lineup, but The Who can and they do it in a way that's genuinely enjoyable.

Like they have been for about 20 years, Daltrey and Townshend are joined by Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey on drums, and they've also got Pete's younger brother Simon on guitar, Pino Palladino on bass, and three keyboardists. Tributes to Keith Moon and John Entwistle were shown on the stage's screen between sets, and they also had multiple montages with photos of the classic four-piece playing during certain songs. The spotlight was of course always on Pete and Roger, but it's also pretty fun to watch Zak Starkey do his thing. He's no Keith Moon, but some say he's better than Ringo.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: 10 highlights from the 2015 induction ceremony
from: ew.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable There's a perpetual schism at work with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony: It is an overlong, nigh-unbearable live event (often lasting well over five hours), but once in the hands of HBO's crack team of editors, it becomes a pretty lively three-hour television spectacle.

Based on the relative inertness of this year's special, the live show must have been absolutely torturous. Maybe it was this year's crop of inductees (JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the "5" Royales, Bill Withers, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Ringo Starr, Lou Reed), or maybe it's just the nature of this show, but there wasn't enough entertainment to justify three hours of your time. Still, even Waterworld has a few cool scenes, so here are the 10 highlights from this year's show.

JOAN JETT Sings "Bad Reputation"
The show certainly started on the right note, with long-overdue inductee JOAN JETT taking the stage to blow through "Bad Reputation," one of her signature singles. Ever more than three decades later, Jett still manages to capture the adolescent aggression that fuels that song, and it still sounds as bracing as it did then. It's almost a shame Jett had to cede the microphone to Tommy James (who wrote the original version of her hit "Crimson & Clover"), Dave Grohl, and Miley Cyrus. They're all great, but Jett's voice remains so singular and powerful that she could have easily held the stage by herself for three songs.

Fast-Forwarding Past Jann Wenner's Introductory Speech
The beauty of watching this special on HBO Go is you can skip right over the Rolling Stone publisher and Hall of Fame chairman's leaden welcoming remarks. One of the great joys of my life was attending the 2014 induction ceremony in Brooklyn, where Wenner was lustily booed on his introduction (those boos were, of course, edited out of the broadcast). Any problems you have with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can be traced back to Wenner, so go ahead and boo from your couch.

Bill Withers' Laid Back Speech
The acceptance speeches at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tend to be really hit and missÑwithout the benefit of musical accompaniment, a lot of the recipients tend to ramble and have trouble stringing together eloquent thoughts. But Bill Withers came armed with bits, and his breezy approach delivered a charming and funny few minutes. Of his inductor, he said, "Stevie Wonder inducting me into the Hall of Fame is like a lion opening a door for a kitty cat." Of the crowd, he noted, "This has got to be the largest AA meeting in the western hemisphere." He also riffed on meeting Beck and made a reasonable case for Miles Davis and Jerry Lee Lewis being included in the same Hall. Withers, who retired from the life 30 years ago, ceded musical duties to Wonder and John Legend, but his performance behind the microphone was divine anyway.
