10 Rock Classifieds That Changed Music History
from: blogs.citypages.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable A few things you can easily find in classified ads: phone sex, apartment rentals, tarot card readers, telemarketing jobs, and a used Toyota Camry with low mileage. Look a little closer, and you might also find your path to rock 'n' roll glory.

OK, answering most musician classifieds won't automatically punch your ticket to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's more likely to result in an awkward jam session at some stranger's residence with three dudes who are twice your age but only know one song all the way through.

Still, the seeds for many very successful bands were sown in the classifieds section. Here are some of them.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
In 1980, after the dissolution of JOAN JETT's all-female rock group the RUNAWAYS, the foxy but tough singer/rhythm guitarist placed a classified ad in L.A. Weekly "looking for a few good men" for her next project. X bassist John Doe helped with auditions. Through the ad, auditions, and recommendations, Jett found bassist Gary Ryan, guitarist Eric Ambel, and eventually drummer Lee Crystal. With the BLACKHEARTS in tow, Jett toured the U.S., promoting her (previously recorded) feisty eponymous album, which the singer and producer KENNY LAGUNA self-financed after more than 20 labels passed.

Slash
Guns N' Roses
Bass player needed for band influenced by Aerosmith, Alice Cooper. Call Slash

In his 2007 autobiography, Slash recalls getting a few calls answering the ad he and drummer Steve Adler placed in The Recycler, circa 1983. But the only prospect they wanted to meet was some dude named Duff McKagan who'd recently relocated to Los Angeles from Seattle. Duff "sounded cool on the phone," so Slash had the bassist meet him, Adler, and their girlfriends at Canter's.

MASHUP MONDAY: 'BEVERLY HILLS ROCK MASHUP' BY QUEEN, WEEZER, JOAN JETT
from: nerdist.com

Well, if you've ever wanted to turn a midwestern dad onto mashup music, here is your chance. This Weezer-JOAN JETT-Queen mashup that has been quietly lurking in the depths of the internet for four years is ready to strike, turning any and all dads within the blast radius into marginally cooler/deafer dudes. Using various instrumental portions of "Beverly Hills", "We Will Rock You", and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", this rock mashup quite simply gives you what you want for 3 minutes and 34 seconds like a really good backcountry bar cover band that specializes in making cross-generational medleys, or like a semi-adequate session of coitus. Midwestern dads love both in equal measure.

Not exactly sure why the image associated with this mashup is this blue baby with transition lenses and a septum ring. Maybe he/she should link up with the Nevermind baby and the Chumbawumba baby and duel with other infant-fronted bands in some sort of toddler-oriented battle of the bands. We'd pay to see that (assuming it was legal).

Anyway, stop reading my mind-vomit and start blasting this jam!

JOAN JETT and I -- In Fashion Magazine 1987
from: miketysonlive.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The theme for In Fashion magazine was a man and woman on the cover.

It was an honor when they asked me to appear with JOAN JETT, one of the greatest rock n' roll performers of all time.

I had just won the Heavyweight Crown from Trevor Berbick. In a week I began training for Bonechrusher Smith.

I must admit they spent a great deal of time with me in makeup. And boy, I needed it for a close-up like this one.

And JOAN JETT -- what a wonderful person. If you get the opportunity to see her live in concert -- don't miss it.
