JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS Headed to Rock Hall of Fame
from: goweho.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Somebody was listening earlier this year when Nirvana's Krist Novoselic introduced JOAN JETT saying he couldn't believe she's not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. It should be hard for anyone who grew up listening to the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll to believe.

Jett was filling in for the late Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's induction performance, completely rocked it, and apparently somebody at the Hall who makes those decisions recognized how influential and respected JOAN JETT is among her peers.

Following the announcement that she and her band, the BLACKHEARTS, would be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, Jett responded via Twitter: "I think it's incredible, I've very proud to be with all these great musicians."

In a Rolling Stone interview, Jett called the induction "a culmination of all you've dreamed about doing as a musician, reaching people, getting respect from other musicians," but was otherwise humble. "It can be really hard sometimes to assess myself. I'm living it and it's hard to step back and see the larger picture in terms of what the music industry thinks of me."

What people think of her has never been a big concern, we suspect. She didn't seem to care if she was playing to huge stadium crowds, as long as she was rocking. Over the years covering events, I'd see her in venues of every size, such as the small county fair stage, where the audience sat on bales of hay. Another year she performed at San Diego Gay Pride, though questions about her sexuality seemed to bore her. In recent years our paths crossed at a free small-town concert in the park. No matter how large the stage, with JOAN JETT it's always been about the music.

Her career took off as a 16-year-old founding member of The RUNAWAYS, the all-girl L.A. band that captivated so many teens in the 1970s. Their story was depicted in the 2010 film "The RUNAWAYS," starring Kristen Stewart as Joan and Dakota Fanning as band mate Cherie Currie, which included the youthful romance between Jett and Currie.

I think it would be appropriate. I've always sort of kept that song away, but I think in this instance it would be a perfect..."

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Soon to be Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer JOAN JETT let the cat out of the bag yesterday that she will be opening for The Who on their North American tour in April.

She made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on New York's Q104.3 saying, "It's very cool and it's karmic because they invited us to record what became [my second album] Bad Reputation in their studio...and just said, 'Pay us when you can.' If it wasn't for that, Bad Reputation may have never gotten made and it's all thanks to The Who's generosity."

JOAN JETT on Hall of Fame Induction: 'I'm Flabbergasted'
from: rollingstone.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable At last year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, JOAN JETT took on the seemingly impossible task of filling Kurt Cobain's shoes as the lead singer of Nirvana, and she absolutely destroyed the place with her rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." This year she'll be able to sing one of her own songs when she's inducted alongside her longtime backing band the BLACKHEARTS. Rolling Stone spoke to Jett about the importance of the induction, the effect of last year's performance and what it all means for punk bands.

Tell me how you heard about it.
I was called by my buddy KENNY LAGUNA, who I work with. We write songs together and he's my producer and he's been a Blackheart for a long time. He called up and told me.

Tell me your first reaction.
It's surreal. I'm sure a big smile came across my face. It's incredible. I'm very flabbergasted. It's going to take a few minutes to sink in before I see how I really feel about it.

Green Day, Lou Reed, JOAN JETT, Ringo Starr Lead 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
from: rollingstone.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced next year's inductees: Lou Reed, Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Bill Withers and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band will all join the class of 2015. Ringo Starr will be given the Award For Musical Excellence and 1950s R&B group the "5" Royales will receive the Early Influence Award.

The induction ceremony will be held at Cleveland's Public Hall on April 18th, 2015. Once again, the general public will be allowed to attend. Tickets go on sale this Thursday.

Artists are eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single. Green Day, whose debut EP, 1,000 Hours, came out in 1989, are entering the institution in their first year of eligibility. "I had to go for a walk when I heard the news," says Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. "We're in incredible company and I'm still trying to make sense of this. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has always held something special for me because my heroes were in there. This is a great time for us to sort of reflect and look back with gratitude."

Jett is equally blown away by the news. "It's surreal and very humbling," she says. "It's a culmination of all you've dreamed about doing as a musician. I've always been hopeful [that I'd get in] because I think it's an incredible acknowledgment. I'm very proud to be with all these great musicians. It's going to take a few minutes to sink in before I see how I really feel about it."

Starr was inducted as part of The Beatles in 1988, though his three other bandmates have since entered the Hall of Fame as solo artists. "This means recognition to me," he says. "And it means, finally, the four of us are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even though we were the biggest pop group in the land. You know that won't look funny in black and white."

Withers, who has been largely absent from the music scene over the past three decades, was surprised when he heard the news. "I never thought it was some kind of entitlement or something," he says. "I just never felt that anyone owed me this. It's something that's nice that happened. I guess I'll have to go buy a suit."

He might even agree to a rare performance on the evening, but at the moment he's far from sure about that. "There are some people that can sing in their later years and some of them that can't," he says. "I don't want to be on of those old guys that sounds like a gerbil trying to give birth to a hippopotamus. I've gotta see if I can't conjure it up."

Jenny Slate, JOAN JETT And Others Collaborate For Sundance Artist Editions
from: bust.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The Sundance Institute has collaborated with Todd Oldham on a line of limited-edition merchandise available for pre-order. The products range from t-shirts to dinner plates to stickers and buttons and patches, all designed by well-known, Sundance-friendly artists.

Seriously, there is so much good stuff here that narrowing it down to only six products was difficult. Who knew that, on top of being a hilarious and amazingly talented actress, Jenny Slate is also a gifted painter?! And JOAN JETT's rock-and-roll take on the tuxedo shirt is something I think we can all get behind. These items are only available for pre-order and will be shipped in January, so they won't get here in time for the holidays. That means you can go ahead and order everything for yourself without even the tiniest bit of guilt.

All proceeds benefit the Sundance Institute, host of the annual Sundance Film Festival.

10 Songs That Embody the Wars of the 1980s
from: pjmedia.com

Grenada -- Operation "Urgent Fury"

Grenada, beginning on October 25, 1983, just two days following the bombing of our Marine barracks in Lebanon, was a test-case -- it signified America's return to major military Operations, and the end of our post-Vietnam doldrums. More important, it sent a direct message to the Soviets -- when they pushed, Reagan pushed back.

Ostensibly conducted to rescue American Medical School students held hostage by an unfriendly Marxist government, there was also the small matter of a certain airstrip under construction by Cuban Combat Engineers (reported by our press as "50 of them," ultimately turning out to be over 500), and soon capable of handling Soviet bombers that could easily reach the Continental US. No, sorry, this will just not work for us.

The very next year, "Weird" Al Yankovic released a parody of the song, titled "I Love Rocky Road." The band was also parodied in a Bloom County segment, as "Tess Turbo and the Blackheads." One rockin' mama is JOAN JETT.
