The JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS frontwoman was presented with the Nanci Alexander Activist Award, named after the founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida, at a star-studded gala held in Florida on Sunday (04Nov12).

Guests were treated to a viewing of Jett's first advertising campaign for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), in which she dressed in her trademark punk garb alongside the tagline, "I am JOAN JETT, and I am a vegetarian."

Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk says, "Joan takes every opportunity to talk about the importance of being kind to animals, and she's among the most dedicated activists I've had the pleasure of knowing. People listen when this star talks. She's had a positive influence on countless fans."

JOAN JETT and PETA go way back -- nearly ten years, with the "I Love Rock n' Roll" singer lending her hand to numerous campaigns against animal cruelty with the 34-year-old advocacy group.

So it may come as a surprise that the rocker is only now joining the ranks of Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Joss Stone and dozens of other celebrities to be featured in a PETA print ad ( premiering exclusively on Billboard).

The ad, which is part of the "I Am a Vegetarian" series, features Jett with her trademark black hair and rocker garb next to the blurb, "A meatless diet saves animals from suffering, combats environmental destruction and is better from my health."

Jett's ad will be unveiled this Sunday at Sublime, a vegan restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, during a ceremony honoring the singer with the Nanci Alexander Activist Award, named for the founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. Fellow rocker and animal rights activist Iggy Pop will be on hand to present the award.
