Mick Rock takes his photos to a new dimension of art at CATM Chelsea
from: examiner.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Mick Rock published his book, "Exposed", which basically chronicles his epic life as one of the preeminent photographers of the rock, punk and pop scene from the 70's onward, in 2010. That tome packs 200 of his best photographs spanning nearly 40 years, and includes iconic images of some of the music world's heavy hitters, like David Bowie, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Syd Barrett, Queen, and The Sex Pistols. At a private preview of his new work at CATM Chelsea on Tuesday night, Rock has unveiled to the world the new direction he is taking as an artist.

Spencer Drate, one of the authors of the recent "Five Hundred 45s", a graphic history of the seven-inch record, first met Rock when he shot The Ramones for the cover of 1980's "End of the Century", and he says it is Rock's brilliant sense of color that sets him apart as a photographer. Drate designed that album as well as most of the packaging for the band's label, Sire, in the 70's, and he still remembers how the colors on those t-shirts jump off the cover. Drate says "it is obvious he is going into another direction, incorporating photography into a different art form". The artwork, which mines Rock's vast archive of rock and pop imagery as the base canvas for his digital manipulation, exhibits what Drate calls "his dynamic sense of color".

Rock's unrepressed interpretation of color in this new work takes some of his most famous images to an expressionistic level that shows he has entered a new dimension as a visual artist. The work on exhibit at CATM vividly reveals his evolution as a master of the camera and now the digital canvas as well. The subjects of his work are cultural icons, and now their images are rendered even more so by being transformed into the ultimate tribute, a pure work of art. One of the works in particular is a testament to this new status, his reworked portrait of JOAN JETT from the cover of 1981's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". The colors of this piece and the texture of the background reveal a sophisticated understanding of Expressionism as a tool for communicating abstract ideas about personality and fame.

The show, which opened Tuesday night, will be on view at CATM Chelsea until April 22. The opening was pretty jam packed, with guests spilling out onto the sidewalk in the balmy March night. Lou Reed, whose portrait Rock shot for Reed's "Transformer" and "Coney Island Baby" covers, stopped by to give Rock his love and a big hug. The crowd moved down a few blocks to the Electric Room at Dream Downtown on West 16th Street and partied well into the night, in true rock and roll style.

from: elvis.com

The yearlong 35th anniversary commemoration of the life and legacy of Elvis Presley continues in Memphis with the third and largest exhibit launching at Graceland in 2012. Check out the photo gallery from the "ICON: The Influence of Elvis Presley Presented by Fender" Exhibit which will be open March 1, 2012 through February 2013.

Curated by the Graceland archives team in partnership with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, this groundbreaking exhibit features 75 artifacts on loan from the famed Cleveland museum, along with items from the collections of many of today's biggest names in music who have been influenced by the King of Rock 'n' Roll. The exhibit celebrates Elvis' status as a music pioneer and icon that paved the way for many of today's artists and celebrities. Items on display in this exhibit include Bono's "MacPhisto" suit from U2's Zooropa performances, Bob Dylan's leather jacket that appears on the album cover "Real Live," James Brown's jumpsuit and vest worn in concert in the 1970s, along with artifacts from Elton John, Trisha Yearwood, Robert Plant, Bon Jovi, Clash, JOAN JETT, Carrie Underwood, Wanda Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Perry, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Justin Timberlake, Kid Rock, Michael Anthony, Ricky Nelson, Wilson Pickett and many others.

Grammy award-winning artist Amy Grant, a well-known Elvis fan, gladly accepted the invitation to display her personal copy of lyrics for "Heartbreak Hotel," handwritten for her by the songwriter, Mae Axton. "The ink is fading on the page, but the special memory of spending time with one of the great writers who gave Elvis a song to sing never will," said Grant when asked about being included in the unique exhibit.

Earlier in 2012, two additional exhibits opened at Graceland. "Elvis on Tour" celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Golden Globe award-winning documentary of the same name. The documentary takes an in-depth look at Elvis' multi-city tour during April of that year. Artifacts include Presley's baby footprints, clothing, childhood tricycle, record player, crib, gold ID bracelet given to her by Elvis and much more.

JOAN JETT, Sgt. Slaughter Lake Elsinore-bound
from: utsandiego.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable From JOAN JETT and pro wrestling legend Sgt. Slaughter to a Night of Fellowship that will feature "an attempt to set the world's largest group of people 'Tebowing'," the Lake Elsinore Storm's 2012 season at Diamond Stadium won't lack for entertainment value.

Jett, a 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee, will perform April 22 at the stadium, following that day's game by the Lake Elsinore Storm, the San Diego Padres' single-A minor league ball club. Admission to the concert is free with a ticket to the game, which may be the lowest price to see Jett perform in decades, since the ticket price range is $9 to $11 per person.

Slaughter, whose musical proclivities are unknown, will appear following the May 26 game, as part of the Storm's Red, White & Blue Memorial Day weekend. Alas, he will not be part of the Storm's Aug. 5 Anti-Bullying Day activities, or the team's Aug. 31 Martial Arts Night, or its several Wacky Weenie Wednesdays.

The "Tebowing" event is named in honor of the nationwide craze sparked last year by devoutly religious Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow. It is scheduled for July 13, as part of the team's annual Night of Fellowship, a presumably non-denominational affair.

The Storm's first home season game is April 5. It will be preceded by a Slaughter-less April 4 exhibition game between the San Diego Padres and the Kansas City Chiefs.

More information on all of the above events and the Storm's entire 2012 season is available at stormbaseball.com of by calling (951) 245-4487.
