PREVIEW: JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS to perform Saturday at Thunder Valley
from: placercountyonline.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Although most fans will be focused on the front woman Saturday at Thunder Valley Casino Resort, JOAN JETT concert-goers might be just as interested to learn about the man behind the drum kit.

THOMMY PRICE has been playing with the BLACKHEARTS, Jett's back-up band, for more than a dozen years. But his resume reads like a Who's Who of rock 'n' roll. It includes providing a steady backbeat for performers such as Billy Idol, Blue Oyster Cult, and Scandal, just to name a few.

Last year, he toured with Green Day throughout Europe at outdoor venues but still enjoys performing for his smallest audience -- his 3-year-old daughter who taps her foot along to the rhythm.

Price started playing drums when he was 5 years old. He was influenced in the late 1950s and early 1960s by listening to the jukebox with his older brother at the local Ice Cream Parlor in Brooklyn,New York. His first gig as a performer was at the Apollo at the age of 10.

"Back then, the Appolo was more like the local movie theatre than what it is today," he said this week from his home in a phone interview.

JOAN JETT covers The Stooges and Gary Glitter at Isle of Wight
Punk rock icon also plays hits 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' and 'Cherry Bomb'

from: NME.COM

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS closed the first night of the Isle Of Wight Festival tonight (June 10) with a classics-packed show in the Big Top tent.

The legendary rocker started her only scheduled UK show of the year shortly before midnight. Jett -- in red sequinned trousers and black vest top -- played songs from across a career which has spanned five decades.

Jett and her band treated the up-for-it crowd to 'Cherry Bomb' and 'I Love Rock'n'Roll' as well as her famous covers of Gary Glitter's 'Do You Wanna Touch Me' and Tommy James and the Shondells' 'Crimson and Clover'. They also performed a version of Sly And The Family Stone's 'Everyday People' and The Stooges' 'I Wanna Be Your Dog', perhaps in tribute to Saturday night's scheduled slot from Iggy And The Stooges at the festival.

JOAN JETT still loves rock 'n' roll
from: portsmouth.co.uk

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT is a woman of contrasts.

One of the most feisty, hardy and uncompromising women in rock, she is also one of the most kind and least offensive.

She's a paradox. Like Andrex, she's both soft and strong.

She's a devoted supporter of the US military and also a spokesperson for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

One of the original rock chicks, she's made no secret of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle she enjoyed aged just 15. And, at 52, she's barely stopped touring since.

But when we speak, she's at home in New York. Having just woken up, she's reading the newspaper and playing with her cats.

Joan loves animals, but says as far as pets go, she had to stop at her three ex-shelter cats.

Cliff Chiang Runs Away and Rocks Out With DC's Most Iconic Heroines [Art]
from: comicsalliance.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable

Known for his remixes of comics and album cover art, Cliff Chiang created this stunning RUNAWAYS-inspired piece starring Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Zatanna, and Batgirl entitled "Don't Give A Damn 'Bout My Bad Reputation." I would absolutely kill to see DC's finest perform "Cherry Bomb."

What Cliff had to say about this piece:

Inspired by a late-night viewing of The RUNAWAYS, and partly an exercise to see if I could make star-spangled pants and Wonder Woman go together. The idea started with Wonder Woman (I briefly entertained using an Ian Curtis Batman) but the idea of an all-girl rock band with Black Canary, Zatanna and Batgirl seemed too good to pass up.

Guitar Gals: The Top 10 Female Guitar Players of All Time
from: gibson.com

While the world of guitar rock, admittedly, is male-heavy, a number of female players have risen to the top over the years, proving women have just as much aptitude for the 6-string as their male colleagues. These women crushed instruments and eardrums in pursuit of a new way to make the guitar sing, scream, shout and move souls.

In this Top 10 list, Gibson.com pays respect to those pioneering players. Who are your top female strummers? Join the debate in the comments section below.

10. Joni Mitchell
Beginning her career as a folkie with an impressive armory of open tunings and evolving into a jazz-influenced player, Joni Mitchell brought a silky touch and smooth, bending voice to her pop-folk songs, with subjects that touched on everything from lost love to the government. Musicians of every genre Ð Prince, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan Ð count Mitchell among their key influences. Meditative and thoughtful, her songs helped create the flourishing style of early Ô70s California, and her songs scaled the charts, including "Help Me," "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Free Man in Paris."

9. Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Raitt's honeyed voice, skillful slide guitar work and archetypal collection of folk, pop, blues, soul and R&B songs have made her one of the most hailed musicians of her generation. Though she was an industry favorite from the early Ô70s, Raitt didn't reach the equivalent in commercial success until her tenth studio album, 1989's Nick of Time. The #1-selling Billboard 200 album whirled her into the mainstream with captivating, flawlessly performed tracks "Have a Heart" and "Thing Called Love." After multiple Grammy wins, platinum-selling albums and an induction into the Rock on the Roll Hall of Fame, Raitt has achieved the kind of widespread success fans and critics had expected for decades.
