The PETA Files I'd Give a Paycheck to Rock Like JOAN JETT!
from: peta.org

Well hot diggity, she's done it again! The world's original female rock star has kindly chosen to use her powers for good by taking the time to shoot a new PSA for us. Just in case you hadn't heard, in addition to being a trailblazing icon, Joan is also an outspoken animal rights activist (not to mention that I've had my hair blown back by her bangin' music).

The Songwriting Hall of Famer doesn't just toss us a bone now and again by lending us her celebrity; this vegan actually talks about animal rights to every interviewer and audience that will listen. Her refreshing outlook and activism include a passion for the environment as well. Her latest CD, SINNER (which is rockin' in my earphones right now), actually comes to you loud and direct in 100 percent recycled packaging.

Because she gets the big picture, she's obviously the perfect candidate to give a spiel about why going vegetarian is most important favor we can do for the only planet we have. Check out the snappy, fact-filled veggie testimonial she did for us here:

JOAN JETT coming to UNI
Rock legend will perform Oct. 31

from: northern-iowan.org

She has been a pop star since the age of 15. She has built a stellar career on classic hits like "I Love Rock N' Roll" and "Bad Reputation." Her BLACKHEARTS Record Label produces some of the best indie rock of today and she is coming to the University of Northern Iowa on Halloween night. She has left her mark on pop culture forever, but the majority of the students here at UNI don't know who she is.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will be performing at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. Jett's success and musical style has influenced a myriad of contemporary acts. Not only has she succeeded in the rock n' roll industry, she has succeeded in a field dominated by men, a rare feat in punk circles.

Jett founded her first band, the RUNAWAYS in her teen years. The RUNAWAYS were an all-girl punk rock band influenced by other acts like The Ramones and The Kinks.

Album: JOAN JETT
Release Year: 1980
Genre: Punk
Type: RB2
Released: 9/14/08

The Story
When this song was recorded in 1979, JOAN JETT was barely 21 and already a punk-rock veteran. As a teenager, she'd been recruited by the notorious LA impresario Kim Fowley to be part of the all-teen girl band, the RUNAWAYS (inspired by singer Cherie Currie, Jett co-wrote the RUNAWAYS' anthem "Cherry Bomb").

Like many early punk bands, the RUNAWAYS scared off as many people as they attracted, but they left their mark; the opening band on their last US tour was the Ramones. Jett eventually took over as the RUNAWAYSÕ leader and singer, so making a solo album was no big stretch.

Repo! The Genetic Opera Sountrack Review
from: SOURCE

low resolution image Not Enlargeable May Nathan Wallace take anyone's eyes out who hasn't yet seen the heart-pumping, blood-red, Hellraiser-meets-Rent body bag bonanza provocatively titled, Repo! The Genetic Opera. But may he take the ears and eyes of anyone who hasn't even heard it yet.

Why? Because Repo's a movie that's all about the music. It's a manic musical operation that just gets under the skin, only to blow its way out like so many incredible acoustic hemorrhages. It's so good it doesn't need the whole movie to work, the soundtrack puts its hooks in like metal into skin.

Repo! The Genetic Opera is a brilliantly outlandish patchwork of bruised gothic beats, razor-wire ballads and post-apocalyptic chorales, all stitched together in rigorously operatic tapestry, which in toto is so irreverently distinctive as to almost defy classification. Each track screams aggressively to be "its own thing," yet when united under their grisly theme, comes together as a kind of aural Frankenstein mosaic, a monster of sound and fury that's certainly like no rock opera before it. Repo is science-fiction at its most obscene and horror at its most lyrical. It's lurid, silly, wild, a little retarded, and it'll kill ya; but in a good way.

The following people have their digits firmly planted on the radio knobs, computer keyboards and dayrunners that get bands around these parts seen and heard.

Granted, there are undoubtedly other worthy candidates that for whatever reason did not surface on this year's relevance radar. Then again, perhaps these omissions are counterbalanced by the others we do know about who always demur from such public displays as editorial selections (and you know who you are!). So without further ado, here are 10 of the most influential people in the Valley music scene in 2008Ñsubmitted for your enlightenment, in no particular order.

Many were the top-10 candidates that retraced their career paths by leafing through scrapbooks, photos and otherwise jogging their memories. As Julie Rader recounted her journey through countless labels in New York back in the day, however, the proven promoter/publicist had the benefit of some visual aids not normally found around these parts.
