Seven Famous People I've "Met"
from: firehorserick.blogspot.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable OK... I rarely leave the house so "met" will have to be very, very loose in my definition.

JOAN JETT
In the mid 1980s I went to a JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS concert at the coliseum in Lawton, OK. Somehow I wound up standing up in the crowd, center stage about 3 rows back. My ears just stopped ringing in March. Unfortunately, I was still such an incredibly nerdish-ultra-dork and shy to the point of being paralyzed with fear even when talking to cashiers at 7-11, so I'm not surprised that I didn't look like I was having fun even though I was having a great time and in complete awe. JOAN JETT looked me in the eye, ME PERSONALLY, stopped strumming her guitar and made a clapping gesture while mouthing the word "clap!" I still feel like we have a special bond, even if it is just in my imagination. http://firehorserick.blogspot.com

Miley Cyrus is latest in long line of pop princesses
from: The Columbus Dispatch

She has a hit series, a pair of multimillion-selling albums and a concert tour for which shows sell out in minutes.

At 15, Miley Cyrus is beyond popular.

But she isn't the first pop princess to turn the world on with her smile -- not by a long shot.

Here's a sampling of pop princesses from past to present.

JOAN JETT
- Age of stardom: 17, playing guitar in the seminal 1970s all-girl punk act, the RUNAWAYS.
- Career high: Her cover version of I Love Rock 'n Roll topped the pop charts in 1982, spending seven weeks at No. 1.
- Career low: She played Michael J. Fox's sister in the 1987 film Light of Day.

Brenda Lee
- Age of stardom: 16, when her single Sweet Nothin's became a top-10 hit in 1960.
- Career high: Her single I'm Sorry topped the U.S. pop charts in the summer of 1960 and remained in the top 100 for more than six months. She recorded the Christmas standard Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree as a 13-year-old in 1958; it was rereleased in 1960 and rocketed to the top of the charts.
- Career low: Eclipsed by the British invasion, Lee decided she couldn't beat them, so she joined them. Searching for a hit, she cut a Mersey beat-style song called Is It True? with future Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in 1964.

Lesley Gore
- Age of stardom: 17, when she topped the pop charts with her first single, It's My Party, in 1963.
- Career high: See above.
- Career low: Quincy Jones -- who produced It's My Party, You Don't Own Me and other Gore hits -- moved on to other projects in the mid-1960s. In the hands of other producers, her career plummeted.

The Graphic Interview: KENNY LAGUNA
from: thegraphicweekly.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable KENNY LAGUNA has worked in many facets of the music industry from the time of WMCA Good Guys through today.

A producer, songwriter and performer, Laguna will be on stage playing the keyboard with JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS when they hit Petoskey Jan. 25. He chatted with The Graphic about some of his favorite people to work with, starting his own record label and how some things have come full circle since his start.

Graphic: How did you get started in the music industry?
Laguna:
... I started learning classical music and then I saw an Elvis movie and it just blew me away ... I got this really fine jazz guy to teach me piano, and then in school I was learning electric bass ... I was very young, and I learned all the songs because that's all I cared about. And by the time I was 12, I was working with the WMCA Good Guys ...

G: Who have been some of your favorite people to work with?
L:
Well, Joan (Jett) for sure. She's fantastic. And there was a fellow named Peter Anders ... (and) Bill Medley from The Righteous Brothers was fantastic.

G: Besides being a producer, you also do some songwriting. What inspires you when writing?
L:
When I was much younger, any girl that I met would inspire a song. Every good date, I'd write a song so I could go sing it to the girl ... I wrote a couple of really good songs when Bobby Kennedy got killed because I was overwhelmed by that. But now, I can create scenarios in my mind and write about them ...
