Books
I'm reading I Am That: Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj by Nisargadatta Maharaj. The real you is timeless and beyond birth and death. It is about self-enquiry. It looks at our issues and our problems. Why our mind and our thoughts ensnare us to such a degree. I find these books quite calming. I'm also reading Consciousness Speaks: Conversations with Ramesh S Balsekar. It gets me into a different mindset so I'm not attached to every little thing that happens. Another book, Be As You Are: the Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, is also helping me make sense of the world.

Film
I usually see what is on TV rather than get out a film. I watch the news and cop shows: Law and Order and CSI. If I get lucky it will be something I love like an old Clint Eastwood Western. The good thing about these early Seventies spaghetti Westerns is that he always helps people who can't help themselves. The defining movie for me is Cabaret. I was 13 when I first saw it. It set me on a showbiz path. My songwriter partner, Kenny, will watch stuff like Live Free or Die Hard when he doesn't want to think too hard. We are sitting next to each other and he is shouting "Great scene!" and I'm immersed in a book saying "Kenny, I'm reading."

Music
I have just been listening to Rage against the Machine very loudly as I was driving in New York. It is very heavy rock with rap elements. There is a great three-piece all-girl band Girl in a Coma who make eclectic rock music. They are big Morrissey fans and have been touring with him. One of my all-time favourite rock bands is Fugazi; they are not together any more but they are a template as to what to be as an independent band. They had commercial success during the 1990s while remaining on their independent record label.
