Double organizers, double the parties for Dinah Shore
JOAN JETT, Taylor Dayne among entertainers

from: thedesertsun.com

The Kraft Nabisco Golf Tournament is upon us, and for thousands of people, mostly lesbians, that means the entertainment has arrived.

And this year, the festivities known as Dinah Shore Weekend are even bigger, thanks to a split in organizational groups.

In January, the two main production companies that had staged events together for more than a decade - Club Skirts and Girl Bars Inc. - severed ties, and each is now presenting a separate lineup.

You too can be a rock 'n' roll star
thanks to Guitar Hero video game

from: www3.cjad.com

(CP) - Josh Holmes played the game so much, his wife made him give it away for a week just to take a break. David Wu calls it his current favourite.

They are just two of Guitar Hero's legion of fans, but their appreciation speaks volumes since they make video games for a living - and Guitar Hero isn't one of theirs. "Guitar Hero is the coolest game I've seen in years," said Holmes, vice-president and studio general manager of Vancouver's Propaganda Games.

"Really funny, really good," echoed Wu, president of Toronto's Pseudo Interactive. "I like games like that, that just kind of change things, come out with a totally new paradigm."

Is Kraft Nabisco aware of Dinah Shore's "other" event?
from: worldgolf.com

It's time once again for the first major of the LPGA season to take place at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. But the big news in Palm Springs this weekend is not if Annika Sorenstam will hoist another Dinah Shore Trophy and jump into Champion's lake for a fourth time.

And the news is not even whether or not Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer will be attempting to win their first major in spite of the fact that in the LPGA's history, only three rookies have made their first Tour win a major.

And it's not even the fact that if Annika wins at the Kraft Nabisco Championship she'll be on her way to achieving the much fabled "Soren-slam". Could it be Alice Cooper and George Lopez' attendance in the Celebrity Pro-Am that brings all the people to this part of California?

Our Weird Tuesday
from: nytimes.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable "It makes for a very well-lubricated communication," said MATTHEW BARNEY at the premiere of his new film, "Drawing Restraint 9," at the Museum of Modern Art.

It was Tuesday night and the crowd was not an unpredictable one for a Barney film: YVONNE FORCE VILLAREAL, CYNTHIA ROWLEY, JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL.

Also a MAN IN A KIMONO. And BJORK, of course, who was wearing a kimono as well, and who was the subject of our line of questioning.

A cold front and existential crisis didn't stop the ''WM3'' party
from: miamiherald.com

''Where's everyone's clothes?'' said a puzzled 3-year-old Blake Ellis as he toddled through South Beach last weekend, fresh off the plane from wintry New York City.

Well might he wonder: The plunge in temperatures every night of one of the year's busiest weekends didn't keep throngs of spring blingers, fashionistas, and record-biz playas from baring vast quantities of flesh as they shivered and hurried between hotel lounges and nightclubs.

March 22 to 28, tens of thousands -- if not hundreds of thousands -- of visitors from around the world converged on Miami for the joint bacchanal of spring break and Winter Music Conference. Many of them didn't let a little cold front stop them from breaking out that $200 micro-mini designer dress.

Carmen Electra: What You Don't Know About the Woman Who Has It All!
from: dotnewsmagazine.com

Carmen Electra has a charmed life. Born Tara Leigh Patrick and christened with her professional name by none other than the "Purple Rain" man himself, Prince, Electra has a pack of movies coming out this year with Scary Movie 4 first up in April. She is also the new face of Max Factor cosmetics, with a bodacious body that is craved by men and women alike. Add to that her rock hunk husband Dave Navarro--who even she admits is more romantic than herself. Life is just great for Electra!

Interviewed during a break from her dance rehearsal for her Max Factor launch, Electra spoke candidly.

"We're an open book," she admits. "I think that's just because Dave and I are really open and honest people. We don't have much to hide. And if we did something we thought we should hide, I just don't think we would hide it."

Rock tours still thriving
from: music.monstersandcritics.com

While successful festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo diversify their lineups to maintain relevance, the two longest-running touring fests - Ozzfest and Vans Warped tour - have survived and thrived by keeping their focus narrow.

Ozzfest and Warped are in their 11th and 12th editions, respectively, and while some of the names have changed in their recently announced lineups, the musical styles remain largely the same. For Ozzfest, that is the hardest of rock; for Warped, it is variations of punk.

'You stay within your niche, but you have to explore and understand how a marketplace changes,' Warped founder Kevin Lyman explains. 'I have to pay attention now to all the little subgenres of punk rock, like emo, screamo, post-hardcore and ska. You have to make sure you have everything covered.'

Hey little cherry blossom
from: blogs.macon.com

Though I will be out on the town this weekend, I'm not the newspaper's official Cherry Blossom Festival blogger. That honor goes to the lovely and talented Stephanie, who's already attended two events today.

There aren't as many music-related events this year (at least, ones that don't involve tribute/cover bands) on the official calendar so I'll probably hitting unofficial stuff these next few weeks. I'll be trying out a different camera so hopefully I will figure out how to take better pictures. It is quite a bit bulkier than the other one so if I bump into you, I apologize in advance.

Just so there's something music-related in today's entry:

"She's the Man" takes its plot from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," but not its dialogue.
from: kcchronicle.com

At least I think not. I haven't read the play since college, but I don't believe Shakespeare wrote the line, "Why do you have tampons in your boot?" It's not in iambic pentameter.

"She's the Man" is sort of a sequel to "10 Things I Hate About You," which turned "The Taming of the Shrew" into a modern teen romantic comedy. "She's the Man" may update kingdoms into high schools and armies into soccer teams, but Viola (Amanda Bynes) does disguises herself as her absent twin brother, Sebastian (James Kirk – what were his parents thinking?). Much romantic confusion and complications follow.

Viola undertakes the charade after her high school cuts its girls soccer team and the coach refuses to let her try out for the boys squad. When Sebastian takes an unannounced trip to England, Viola assumes his place at Illyria Prep, the school he just transferred to, and joins Elyria's soccer team hoping to trounce her old school.

No Jett Sweat in AZ - Just Good Music
from: rawknroll.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable "One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain" – Bob Marley

There is undoubtedly an inherent, invisible power in music; you can’t touch it but you can feel it. Not only can it affect our emotional lives, in some belief systems, it can even affect the weather. And tonight in an obscure field in the middle of rural Phoenix, JOAN JETT and her BLACKHEARTS worked us over on all counts, bringing both the rain and emotional rawknroll into our lives.

Arizona hadn’t had a drop of rain in over 140 days; so for the local farming community, this was a good thing. For people like me in flip-flops and beach garb, well-it sucked completely because along with the rain, came the freezing cold; a disastrous combination for an outdoor show.

JOAN JETT, Rockin' set for Ag Park on July 1
from: The Columbus Online Community - Columbus Telegram

COLUMBUS - The bands have been confirmed and the date has been set for Rockin' on the Racetrack, renamed from Rockin' on the Runway because of its new location.

Headlining the show will be JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, a women's band that peaked in the '80s and released several top ten hits including "I Love Rock and Roll," which reached number one, and Tesla, a group from the late '80s and '90s whose hits included "Love Song" and "Heaven's Trail".

Damon Vogt of Creston, event founder and promoter, said Rockin' on the Racetrack will be held as a major event of the city-wide Sesquicentennial celebration.

Columbia, gem of the Ostrich Festival
from: phoenixnewtimes.com

Don't fuck with JOAN JETT. The leather-lovin' singer-songwriter has come a long way since her prepubescent days with Kim Fowley's all-girl garage band, The RUNAWAYS. And if you thought she looked tough in the 1982 video for "I Love Rock N' Roll," you should see her now -- Ms. Jett has turned herself into a lean, mean rocking machine, keeping herself in shape by jogging backstage before shows and doing yoga (she looks like she's been lifting weights, too). She wasn't afraid to get into a confrontation with security at her last Valley show at Fort McDowell Casino in 2003, when guards started pushing people around in the crowd. Visibly angry, she stopped the show, stated, "I can't believe I'm seeing this shit," and ordered security to stop trampling her fans and move the guardrail closer to the stage. The guards smartly complied. Jett's not only kept herself buff, but busy as well, starring as Columbia in the Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, hosting a weekly radio show called "Radio Revolution With JOAN JETT" on Sirius' Underground Garage channel, producing the debut album by Ohio punk band The Vacancies, and nabbing a spot on Warped Tour '06. So don't ask "where is she now?" Ask "where is she next?"

Warped, Ozzfest tours headed to Detroit
from: mlive.com

Warped on Woodward? No Ozzy on Ozzfest? Two major summer music festivals - Warped and Ozzfest - return to metro Detroit this year, one at a new location, the other without its familiar headliner.

The 2006 edition of the Vans Warped Tour will return to Detroit's Comerica Park parking lot on July 29. Dubbed "Warped on Woodward," a portion of Woodward Avenue near the stadium, Fox Theatre and State Theatre will be closed to accommodate its seven stages, dozens of bands and thousands of fans.

The move was prompted by the recent closing of the Pontiac Silverdome, where it was held from 2003-2005, according to Dave Clark of tour promoter Live Nation's Farmington Hills office.

Warped is the nation's longest-running touring rock festival and has launched the careers of groups from Blink-182 to Good Charlotte. They get to see all the bands they like in one shot."

Tickets for some shows go on sale March 14th, which includes a double-disc tour compilation.

Warped Tour Kicking Off A Day Early — Dates And Venues Revealed
from: mtv.com

Last year, Warped Tour organizers caved under the massive weight of Internet postings from anxious fans and announced the tour's full itinerary in early February. But this year, things were different: They managed to hold off until the beginning of March.

On Thursday (March 2), Warped founder Kevin Lyman confirmed an itinerary obtained by MTV News, which lists dates and venues for 45 of the 49 cities the tour will hit this summer; it used to be 48 cities, but Lyman let it be known that Warped will now kick off on June 15 in Columbia, Maryland — and not on June 16 in Columbus, Ohio, as had previously been reported (see "Warped Tour Founder Vows To Press On Despite Being Punk'd").

"Yeah, we've added another city. Make sure people know about that," Lyman laughed. "We wanted to sort of roll this itinerary out a little bit at a time, but why not do it all now? I think people's enthusiasm about Warped speaks to just how amazing and strong our fanbase is."
