Musicians bring star power to studios
Teens learn turntable etiquette while listening to their father and mother's music

from: cleveland.com

New York - Think of them not as celebrities, but as friends having you over for a musical get-together. Except, of course, you aren't allowed through the gated mansion.

XM and Sirius Satellite Radio are betting you'll come over anyway. The satellite-radio providers are engaged in an arms race in which musicians are the weapons. The gig, of course, is that their fans will follow them and subscribe.

In December, XM announced "The Bob Dylan Show," a weekly hourlong mix of music hosted and handpicked by the man himself. The announcement was an attempt to stem the hoopla surrounding Howard Stern's arrival to Sirius - and, of course, to tap the musician's hard-core and gadget-savvy fan base.

Students rock through the ages
Teens learn turntable etiquette while listening to their father and mother's music

from: silive.com

The sound coming from a third-floor hallway of Tottenville High School on a Friday afternoon would give a visitor of a certain age pause.

"Hush" by Deep Purple is blaring away, as loud as the vintage audio-visual equipment in Room C301 will allow, resulting in a distortion familiar to almost anyone who cranked up the volume on vinyl records through the 1970s.

And there chatting beneath the barrage of sound emanating from a blue record player and its single speaker is a group of about 20 T-shirted Tottenville students, members of the after-school Classic Rock Club.

Warped Tour Nabs Trailblazing Rocker JOAN JETT For Trek
from: MTV.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Warped founder Kevin Lyman says Jett wants to talk to the girls at tour stops.

JOAN JETT has been punk rock almost since the day she was born.

When she was 15, she was prowling the stage as a guitarist and singer in the groundbreaking all-girl group the RUNAWAYS, playing a fast and loud hybrid of American heavy metal and British punk. By the time she was in her 20s, she had produced (GI), the landmark debut album by Los Angeles gutter-punks the Germs. And by her 25th birthday, she had assembled her own brash band, the BLACKHEARTS, best known for their 1982 #1 hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll" — famously tackled by Britney Spears in her movie "Crossroads."

INDUSTRY PROFILE:
BLACKHEART RECORDS Founder KENNY LAGUNA

from: serge.org

Click to enlarge As it often happens in music intensive families, parents often try to pass the musical torch onto their children. That is exactly what KENNY LAGUNA’s folks tried to do, figuring that classical music would be a solid starting point for the lad. It wasn’t too long though before Kenny found that his passions were skewed in the direction of rock and roll. "I heard ‘Jailhouse Rock’ by Elvis, and I knew what I wanted to play," Kenny recalls. "Then I remember my mother telling, ‘If you want to be a drummer, we’ll get you a drum. Don’t beat on the piano!’ At any rate, I was about five years old and already knew I would make my living at music." Kenny delved into music, listening to and absorbing as much rock and roll as he could. At the age of twelve, he played in an outfit called WMCA Good Guys primarily for high school hops. WMCA was a radio station that was formerly a home of Alan Freed, and when Kenny was involved the station featured another legendary jock Jack Spector. "Jack just loved me. I knew all the songs, I worked for twenty dollars a day doing all these hops, and after that I was in. From then on I was involved in the record business."

Through his contacts at WMCA, Kenny went to work for Kama Sutra Records at the age of fifteen. It was there that the he met hit record producer Thomas Jefferson Kay, who became one of Kenny’s mentors and led the teen to the music business aspect he found he had a true passion for. Under Kay’s tutelage, Kenny helped produce the song "Emily Makes Her Own Kind Of Music" by the Nighthawks. "After that, I started making demos for Kama Sutra. Doing these demos with the songs I was writing I got to work with everybody in the studios, so I was really getting into the business. Tommy Kay and a lot of other producers there were huge influences on me." Kenny became more intensely involved in producing, although he often played or sang in the studios and on stage with some of the bands he worked with. It was in the late sixties when Kenny became immersed in the growing bubble gum rock movement, producing artists such as Ohio Express, The Archies, Jay and the Americans, and a virtual who’s who of the genre. "During a three year period, we were moving more hits than the Beatles, yet no one really knew who we were. We would sometimes make nine records a day and then go on the road with a band and come back and do more records. The labels were releasing almost everything we threw at them."

In 1969, Kenny was in Long Beach, California when an idea for a song came to him. That song was "Lord" which dealt with a Western outlaw who after being shot during a gold robbery begs the Lord to let him live long enough to see his lady one more time. A couple days later, the song was recorded under the name of Spencer Blackfoot, and included vocalist Steve Tracy, future "Grease" composer Louis St Louis" and the horn section from Meco. Many people were impressed with the song and tried to make a hit out of it, including the youthful president of MGM Records Mike Curb. Although hit status would somehow evade "Lord," Kenny’s producing talents gained widespread notice in the music industry. This helped lead to production projects with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, Dave Edmunds, Tony Orlando, David Essex and many other well known recording artists. In the early seventies, Kenny not only produced the album "Tighter and Tighter" by Tommy James & the Shondells, he became a member of that band for a couple years. Then in 1977, through a label contact, Kenny met a publicist who worked with The RUNAWAYS and Blondie. He ended up at a hotel in London where he was supposed to interview The RUNAWAYS to consider producing their upcoming album. "I thought that could be pretty wild, working with this all-girl band. But I didn’t have the job yet, so I went to the hotel lobby and ran into the head of Beserkley Records. He offered to give me a ride to the airport in this big limo he had, and there he told me that Cherie Currie was leaving the RUNAWAYS. So he talked me into going to California instead of staying there for this interview." Kenny went back to the Golden State, where he produced the debut album by a then unknown Beserkley artist named Greg Kihn. "The best thing for me was realizing that Greg was this cool, super talented guy who was really versatile. I’m not big at saying this guy is better than that guy, but he did seem like he really had it going." Greg Kihn’s career would explode a couple years later, and while at Beserkley, Kenny also helped produce and perhaps elevate the careers of Jonathan Richman and Earthquake.

Jett age: The pioneering singer still loves rock 'n' roll
from: Recordnet.com

JOAN JETT knows firsthand the danger of being a pop culture pioneer. The Philadelphia native was just 15 when she earned her first national exposure as part of producer Kim Fowley’s seminal all-girl band the RUNAWAYS. Women rockers were rare in the mid-1970s, and the RUNAWAYS’ club clientele occasionally made it clear they preferred it that way.

"The audiences were very macho and didn’t want to see girls on stage," Jett recalled. "They told me to get off.

"Then you have a whole audience spitting on you. I would be covered with a sea of it. Then the bottles would be thrown at you. More often than scared, I was (angry)."

10 reasons JOAN JETT rocks
from: TheNewsTribune.com

Rock legend and prototypal rock vixen JOAN JETT is the main attraction Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino’s showroom, where she will perform with her longtime backing band, the BLACKHEARTS.

And while it’s been a minute since that combo has scored a chart-topping hit, here are 10 reasons why JOAN JETT still rocks.

1. She gave us one of the greatest remakes of the rock era. Her smash anthem "I Love Rock ’N Roll" was originally a B-side for British rock outfit, the Arrows. But Jett’s remains the definitive version, all the more since Britney Spears’ blasphemous remake made us all the more nostalgic for JOAN JETT’s charismatic snarl.

Longtime rocker has still got it
JOAN JETT's collaborator, KENNY LAGUNA, offers a colorful supply of stories about the phenom
from: The Olympian

JOAN JETT's famous cover of Tommy James and the Shondels' "Crimson and Clover" was the result of one of those magical moments when everything comes together perfectly.

"Joan pulled out the Tommy James album one day, and she goes, 'Oh, I love this song,' " said KENNY LAGUNA, Jett's longtime collaborator, and a former Shondel. "We were just fooling around at a sound check one day, and she did the song.

"Joan went into a booth with the guitar, and that record is her singing live," Laguna said. "That one song was magic right there and then. She saw God when she was in there."

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS - Chevy Speed Stampede Review
from: harderbeat.com

If you have never seen JOAN JETT, shame on you! She is, undoubtedly, one of the most humbled badasses in rock and roll. Whenever she hits the stage, she simply states, "We're The BLACKHEARTS from New York" and proceeds to rock your ass off. After opening appropriately with "Cherry Bomb," they then played all of their classic anthems like "I Love Rock and Roll," "Light of Day" and cover "Crimson and Clover. Surprisingly she played the title track off her up coming CD, Naked. This song about introspection kicks more ass than a punk rock donkey. Rock indeed.

Chuck Norris: He just keeps on kicking for adoring fans
from: courierpress.com

Chuck Norris does not fade away. By all rights he should have, by now. "Walker, Texas Ranger," his law-and-order TV series, finished its run on CBS in May 2001, after eight years and 203 episodes. And that should have been that for the great Stoneface, outside of the endless cable reruns, the Total Gym infomercials and the occasional late-night rebroadcast of one of his '80s-era chop-socky movies ("Lone Wolf McQuade," "Missing in Action," etc.).

But Chuck Norris, or maybe just Chuck Mania, endures.

The 65-year-old martial-arts master is the object of a kind of sardonic cult veneration. Conan O'Brien, on his late-night show, has been airing vintage "Walker" clips for months. Collegehumor.com, a Web site popular among the dorm set, regularly links to all things Norris on the Internet (recent entry: a rare photograph of Norris sans beard). Norris popped up in a cameo in "Dodgeball" two summers ago, and in a two-hour "Walker" movie in October, which drew respectable ratings.

Mom sings her way into national finals
from: contracostatimes.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable DID YOU EVER HAVE a "Risky Business" moment a la Tom Cruise, singing into a hairbrush in the privacy of your own home?

Pleasanton's Rhonda Taylor had such a moment last October -- although hers took place in front of a video camera at a Laundromat.

Luckily, that was exactly what the "Snuggle Be A Singing Scentsation Contest" judges were looking for, and they named her a top-10 finalist in the nationwide search to create a five-mom band called "The Snuggle Scentsations."

South Lake Tahoe Packages Big-Name Entertainment with Heavenly Skiing
from: firsttracksonline.com

S. Lake Tahoe, CA (Monday, January 2, 2006) - Already acknowledged as the only resort to truly combine 24-hour entertainment with world-class skiing, snowboarding and services, Heavenly Mountain Resort, which straddles the California/Nevada state line in South Lake Tahoe, is raising the bar by offering ski and snowboard vacation deals that package concerts featuring big-name entertainers with skiing and lodging.

The first foray into this new genre features a special acoustic engagement with singer/songwriter Jason Mraz. Critics compare this hot young artist to Dave Matthews and a funkier version of John Mayer.

"People come to Heavenly for the whole California/Nevada experience," said John Wagnon, Heavenly’s vice-president of marketing and sales. "You get big snow, that famous California sunshine, big mountains and incredible views. And you get wild Nevada nights with all-night entertainment. No other destination can offer such a unique experience."

TV on DVD Behind Without the Music
from: filmfodder.com

You may have noticed lately that there has been an explosion of TV series being released on DVD. It has become a weekly occurrence. The reason of course is money. The first seasons of "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" each sold over a million copies. TV on DVD sales in the past year accounted for $2 billion, and those figures are only expected to go up. And when studio executives smell money, they become like sharks converging on the bloated carcass of a whale, they can't feast enough. So they are emptying their archives, throwing as many titles out there as possible. From "Lost" to "Airwolf", old or new, long lived or cancelled after one season (Nowhere Man? Was that even ever on TV?), they are coming out on DVD.

And therein lies the problem. Especially with the older shows.

As this article from the Hollywood Reporter shows the music industry, (never shy when it comes to douchebaggery - i.e. suing 12-year-olds, installing software on your PC leaving you vulnerable to hacks, etc.) charges enormous licensing fees to renew music that originally aired on TV shows. The original licenses only covered broadcast rights, not DVDs because, well, DVDs didn't even exist yet (and later no one foresaw the popularity of TV on DVD). DVD studios have two choices pay the huge fees, or take the music off the DVD (and replace it with cheaper, usually crappier, music).
