The Shepherd Express - Milwaukee Concert Reviews
Blackheart Rock

from: shepherd-express.com

On Friday night the BLACKHEARTS climbed onstage at the Waukesha County Fair like feral animals answering a dinner bell. With no pretenses whatsoever, bandleader JOAN JETT plugged in her guitar and went to work. For the next 65 minutes, the black-leather-clad quintet gave fairgoers a crash course in balls-to-the-wall three-chord rock, often transitioning from one song to the next without a break. Covering every genre from TV theme songs to Sly and the Family Stone, and Ramones-influenced speed pop to '80s hair metal, Jett and her band stomped on the accelerator and took their fans for a wild ride through the amusement park called rock 'n' roll.

The 15-song set drew from every phase of Jett's 30-year career. She acknowledged her RUNAWAYS roots with "Cherry Bomb" before launching into "Bad Reputation," "A Hundred Feet Away" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)." Jett also previewed "Androgynous, "Five" and several other songs off her upcoming CD, Naked. Drummer THOMMY PRICE and bassist Enzo generated a formidable triphammer rhythm section that never stumbled once during the show. Their percussive assault was the perfect complement to Jett's guitar, a chainsaw taking ferocious bites from a chunk of wood.

After nearly three decades of constant touring, Jett, without seeming effort, has become the reigning high priestess of power chord rock, a tough-as-nails version of Sheryl Crow. Jett's sinewy arms and whippet-thin frame were topped off by eyeliner so thick you could carve your initials in it. Her road-hardened whisky voice is the perfect vehicle to deliver her stinging ballads of unrequited love ("Hate Myself for Loving You") and abusive relationships ("Love is Pain" and "Fetish").

Rock 'n' Roll takes over Fayetteville
AMP hosts Steppenwolf & JOAN JETT

After stepping inside the green screening that separates the Arkansas Music Pavilion from the outside world, audience members would find themselves in the parking lot, with plastic seats and tables, and overpriced food and drink.

Clusters of people, from leather-wrapped 50-year-olds to a woman in dress slacks with a Harley Davidson sweater draped over her shoulders, country club style, to families of four wandered around the rear perimeter, grazing for food or $4 cans of Budweiser.

As the sun went down on the first day of performances, John Kay and Steppenwolf took the stage. The band sounded solid as they went through a set of blues and rock, and they sounded similar to, or better than the original songs, except for the addition of a double bass pedal, and Kay's inability to wail like he used to.

Who are your style idols and why?

I think Scarlett Johansson is a great style icon. That girl knows how to do glamour her own way, and is not afraid of her body. JOAN JETT and Gwen Stefani also stand out to me. Neither of them ever followed the crowd.
