JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS an interview with rock veteran / Blackheart KENNY LAGUNA
from: news-4u.com

On nearly any and every given weekend, one can go out to a local nightclub and hear the song "I Love Rock And Roll." Ever since Britney Spears shook her sexy ass to it during the karaoke scene in the movie Crossroads, cover bands everywhere (especially here in Evansville) began playing it in their standard set lists. The song definitely has stood the test of time. When it came along back in 1981, radio stations, car stereos, and pizza parlor jukeboxes were constantly blasting it. It was harder to escape then as a Nickelback song is today. But on the weekend of May 6 & 7, there will be no need to go hear a half-baked rendition or crank up the stereo to jam on the song. The band that originally recorded it, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, will be playing the authentic version of the song at Aztar's Hoosiers Lounge.

As a member of The RUNAWAYS, frontwoman JOAN JETT led the way for what would become the riot grrl scene. Besides the RUNAWAYS song "Cherry Bomb," her other hits include "Bad Reputation," "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and "Little Liar." She appeared on the silver screen with Michael J. Fox in the film Light Of Day. It also featured actor Michael McKean, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and a young Trent Reznor.

In 1995, Joan recorded with a band known as Evil Stig (Gits Live in reverse). The band was comprised of former members of The Gits whose vocalist Mia Zapata was murdered on her way home after playing a show on July 7, 1993. The album was all new versions of Gits songs with Joan on vocals. The proceeds from sales went towards a crime investigation fund to help solve Zapata's murder. Recently, Joan appeared as Columbia in the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show. Today, she hosts the radio program Underground Garage on Sirius satellite radio.

JOAN JETT Influences a New Generation of Women in Rock
from: AfterEllen.com
by Kris Scott Marti

Before The Donnas, the Strokes, and The Killers, there was JOAN JETT. Harder rocking than Gwen Stefani and prettier then Elvis, JOAN JETT is best known for recording, with her band The BLACKHEARTS, the ultimate rock and roll anthem, "I Love Rock N' Roll." Strutting onstage in leather, with a Gibson guitar thrown over her shoulder, Jett is every inch a rock star.

This mother of the riotgrrl/power punk sound hales from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family moved to California in the early 70s and Joan became involved with a group of teenage women forming a band under the tutelage/exploitation of notorious promoter Kim Fowley.

After a few musician changes, The RUNAWAYS premiered with band members Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Sandy West and JOAN JETT. An all-teenage-girl band rocking out to songs about drinking and hard living was a novel act in an era dominated by big, testosterone-fueled groups like KISS, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones. The RUNAWAYS disbanded in 1979 after putting out the punk classic "Cherry Bomb" and five albums.

GEMS Awards Lifetime Achievement To Howard Bloom
from: globalentertainmentnetwork.com

New York, NY — The Global Entertainment & Media Summit (GEMS) will honor artist development genius Howard Bloom on Saturday, May 14th, with its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award for Commitment to Excellence for his outstanding contributions to music and film.

The Ceremony will take place at the Laugh Factory/Times Square Arts Center during GEMS two-day conference where a host of music, film and media industry leaders will gather and give tribute to one of their own.

Congratulations come from former colleagues in the music and media industry with whom Bloom worked as journalist, as first editor of Circus magazine, where he fell in love with rock 'n' roll, and later as head of one of the biggest star making PR Companies in the music business, The Howard Bloom Organization. As noted in Gear Magazine, he helped launch the careers of nineteen year olds like Prince and JOAN JETT, and built enduring careers for folks, who were finding their way — John Mellencamp and Billy Idol, and worked with Billy Joel, Aerosmith, and Queen. Bloom is also credited with saving Prince's mega-movie hit "Purple Rain" from being cancelled by Warner Brothers. Bloom also helped put ZZ Top, John Mellencamp, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Run DMC on the map.

The Eyeliners Offer No Apologies
The Band Discusses Its Debut on JOAN JETT's BLACKHEART RECORDS

from: womanrock.com
by Tracy Fay

I'm on my way to meet the Eyeliner's at BLACKHEART RECORDS, a label they were recently signed too. I'm tired because I stayed out too late last night to see the band open up for label founder JOAN JETT at Webster Hall, but their performance was worth it and really made an impression on me, so I'm eager to learn more about what motivates these girls.

Live, The Eyeliners were loud and confident, radiating charisma and a massive amount of rock n roll machismo. They also appear to be contortionists with their instruments at times, twisting themselves into unnatural positions to play, as if to show the audience, "yes we can play and let me prove it to you." I teased band member Gel about how she scratches her guitar behind her head and she joked back that people actually ask if she does yoga. It's obvious the band's nine years together have been spent focused on performance and musicianship.

One interesting fact you may not realize unless you're a die-hard fan, or you notice the resemblance, is that The Eyeliners are sisters. The three players started their musical interests early; dancing around the house, miming guitar solos they heard on the radio, listening to a lot of 50's and 60's rock their parents played. One impressionable day however Lisa gave the lot their first taste of punk rock and they quickly developed an appetite. Bands like The Stiff Little Fingers and The Ramones inspired the siblings to start their own group. With Lisa playing bass, Gel on guitar, and Laura singing they learned their rudiments and started banging out songs.

Innovative rocker Jett bringing energy to Aztar
from: CourierPress Entertainment
By Gordon Engelhardt Courier & Press

JOAN JETT never set out to be a trendsetter or innovator. She just couldn't help herself. After forming the RUNAWAYS, an all-girl rock band in the mid-1970s, Jett later became the first woman to start her own label, BLACKHEART RECORDS.

Arguably one of the most influential female figures in rock 'n' roll history, Jett and her BLACKHEARTS will play two shows on Friday and Saturday at Aztar. The first performance will begin at 7:30 each night, with the second show at 10.

KENNY LAGUNA, Jett's longtime collaborator, co-producer and keyboard player, said the punky tomboy's energy level is what sets her apart.

Jett rocks the Forum
from: The Oracle
By Angela Dolan

The "Queen of Punk" reigned over the St. Pete Times Forum Friday night when JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS took the stage at 8.

Jett is an icon in the music industry, having had three top-10 and seven top-100 songs on the Billboard charts as well as eight other successful singles. She was also nominated for a Grammy in 1989 and has released 21 albums.

With "I Love Rock and Roll" dominating the charts at No. 1 for eight weeks straight in the '80s and Britney Spears covering the track in 2001, the song's infamy spans generations.

Satellite radio has created a new frontier for music lovers
from: Herald.com
By Evelyn McDonnell

Janie 'could just dance to that rock 'n' roll station" in the Velvet Underground's Rock & Roll. Modern Lovers' Roadrunner drove past the Stop & Shop "with the radio on." Do You Remember Rock'n'Roll Radio?, The Ramones asked.

Remember, indeed. For at least a decade, and arguably for three, music and radio have been antonyms in most parts of the United States. If you love music, really love music, the AM and FM dials are the last places you go to hear it. There are too many commercials, too few songs; those songs get played over and over until they morph into viruses. The narrowing of playlists and consolidation of station ownership were two of the main causes for the decline of the music industry this century. Radio wasn't creating and nurturing music fans; it was killing them off.

Then along came satellite.
