She Loves Rock and Roll
from: Bradenton Herald
by Wade Tatangelo

She loves rock and roll, cherry bombs, her bad reputation and black leather, but hates fake friends, little liars and herself for loving you.

Yes, we're talking about JOAN JETT, the singer/songwriter/guitarist and great interpreter of classics such as "Crimson and Clover" and "Roadrunner" who has been a female rock icon for more than two decades.

From her sex kitten days spent singing "Cherry Bomb" with the RUNAWAYS to BLACKHEARTS-era anthems such as "I Love Rock and Roll" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You," Jett has surely earned the right to be called the original riot grrl.

THE GITS Documentary to Premier At Seattle International Film Festival
from: blabbermouth.net

Seattle punk-rock band THE GITS, whose lead singer, Mia Zapata, was murdered in 1993, are the subject of a new documentary, "The Gits Movie", which is scheduled to premier on Friday, May 28 at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) at the Egyptian Theater on Capitol Hill. There will be a second screening on Monday, May 30. In August, "The Gits Movie" will screen at the Don't Knock the Rock music and alternative culture festival in Los Angeles.

Commented THE GITS drummer Steve Moriarty: "It's hard to believe that we began work on the documentary about THE GITS nearly three years ago. That was long before the detectives ever made the DNA match to the psychopath who killed Mia. During the course of making the film, the man was arrested, brought to trial in Seattle, convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 36 and a third years in state prison. It became difficult to finish the film as our story kept unfolding before us. The film is about the music, us as individuals, and our community in the time of a crisis. It is not a rock and roll movie, an obituary or a glamorous murder mystery."

Zapata was killed a few days after THE GITS returned to Seattle after a tour of the West Coast. She was lead singer and wrote lyrics for the band, who were making a name for themselves with songs filled with raw emotion.

She Loves Rock & Roll, JOAN JETT signs the Vacancies
from: clevescene.com
by D.X. Ferris

Rock icon JOAN JETT has signed Cleveland's Vacancies to her BLACKHEART RECORDS, a longstanding indie label with major distribution, whose catalog includes Jett, the Eyeliners, the Chemical Brothers, and Big Daddy Kane.

"The Vacancies are an incredible live band," says Jett. "They have great songs with excellent lyrics that apply to people's everyday lives."

The Vacancies met Jett after she heard their 2002 Gutpunch CD and chose them to open for her in Cleveland and Cincinnati. The Cleveland show fell through when drummer Sean Watkins left, but the band regrouped for the Cincinnati concert, adding skinsman Angelo Merendino and leaving a good impression. Jett kept in touch and eventually offered the band a modest one-album deal that will pay off later if it works out and won't create a debt if it doesn't.
