JOAN JETT: Breeding Rock Fans
from: Long Islander Journal

It hit me at the House of Blues in Las Vegas this July at my first JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS concert. Right after their first song, I'd abandoned my pricey balcony seats (and friends) in a public seizure of excitement for the bouncy throng in front of the stage. Halfway through their set Joan yelled for the house lights and asked the balcony folks if they could hear her. I turned to see every seat filled with a crowd of middle-aged, fanny-packin', $6.99 buffet-hounds screaming like real rock fans.

Now, I'd definitely been harboring some fear of a lame turnout or a bummer 'so what ' energy from this family-fun kinda crowd, and that's why I'd pretty much ignored my surroundings until that moment. My relief and awe had me defying gravity and wondering what about this show had turned this audience into real rock fans.

By the end of this show I realized that this rockin crowd said more about the rock star than the fans. Iconic and still maintaining subversive street creed, JOAN JETT and her band from New York City put on a tight show that'll have you sweating, grinding, and even barking. Her punk muscle carries the crowd like an avalanche, leaving you gasping as you try to match her powerful voice on lyrics you'll be surprised you know. A born performer with a tough as leather rep, Jett will find a way to blow your mind again when she flashes a sweetie-pie smile at her more raucous fans.

File This Under Rock History
from: rocketcityrecords.com

For those of you that couldn't be at the JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS August 18th Sun Theater Show in Anaheim, rock history was made when, after 24 years, Joan & Cherie shared the stage for a kick-ass rendition of the RUNAWAYS signature song Cherry Bomb.

After a blazing set Joan returned for her encore (a reworking of Science Fiction from Rocky Horror) followed by the "special event" everyone had been waiting for. No one could believe their ears as she announced, "I'd like to invite a very special old and dear friend to help out on this song, we used to be in a band together called The RUNAWAYS - Cherie Currie."

Dressed in Black (and not her trademark corset) Cherie bounded onto the stage to thunderous applause as the BLACKHEARTS launched into Cherry Bomb. Interestingly Joan stepped back to let Cherie sing lead on most of the song, with the two providing the Ch... Ch... Ch... Ch... Ch... Cherry Bombs! And ended as a tag team on the last verse.

Jett, Currie Set Off 'Cherry Bomb,' Hope For RUNAWAYS Reunion
from: MTV.com

ANAHEIM, California — For the first time in almost a quarter of a century, former RUNAWAYS JOAN JETT and Cherie Currie appeared onstage together to bang out the seminal girl-band staple "Cherry Bomb."
BR Topping her hour-plus show Saturday night with the BLACKHEARTS, Jett surprised the Sun Theatre crowd by introducing her childhood friend and ex-bandmate, who emerged in basic black instead of her once-trademark lingerie. Each appearing considerably younger than her 40 years, the ladies tore through the 1976 number like two sex-craved, rebellious teenagers born again — Currie singing and Jett playing guitar as though they were seducing and serenading each other. The song ended with Currie bowing at Jett's feet and the two sharing a hug and kiss.

JOAN JETT Joined Onstage By Fellow Runaway, Cherie Currie
from: cdnow.com

At first, it seemed like just another JOAN JETT show at the sold-out Sun Theatre in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday (Aug. 18). But the rumors just wouldn't die that something special was going to happen by the end of the evening.

Jett and her longtime band the BLACKHEARTS ripped through a typical high-energy set that mixed old ("Bad Reputation," "The French Song") and new ("Fetish," "Androgynous") originals with their usual collection of cool cover tunes, which this night included selections by Iggy Pop ("Real Wild Child"), Jonathan Richman ("Roadrunner"), and Tommy James ("Crimson & Clover") and others.

But by the time they closed the regular set with "I Hate Myself for Loving You" the place was abuzz with chatter about what was about to happen. All were in agreement it probably had something to do with the RUNAWAYS, Jett's late-1970s band which also included Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Sandy West, and Jackie Fox.

Sum 41 weren't the only ones who ditched the ubiquitous black car. The tranquility of the red carpet was shattered when a deafening motorcycle pulled up behind a line of limos. The passengers? JOAN JETT clinging firmly to actor/bodyguard/Hell's Angel Chuck Zito. The two were dressed for the part in black leather pants and jackets, but Joan removed her jacket with a flourish--revealing a skimpy "top" that consisted of two scraps of leather held together with chains made out of safety pins. Guess you're never too old to be a rock star.
