Review: JOAN JETT gives Jones Beach a masterclass in rock and roll

low resolution image Not Enlargeable "Welcome to Joan's Beach," a message displayed on the giant televised screen, with red graphics. As Jett took the stage, her presence was met with a royal New York welcome, earning her and The BLACKHEARTS a standing ovation.

A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Jett kicked off her set with the mid-tempo "Victim of Circumstance," where she showed some attitude and the growl in her voice. It was followed by the classic "Cherry Bomb," where archived images of Jett were displayed on the screen, which resonated well with the audience, as red lights dimmed from the stage. "How we doing Jones Beach?" she asked, and the response in unison was "yeah!"

"We're The BLACKHEARTS from New York too," Jett said. "We've got some singers and dancers don't we? Don't she shy," she added, encouraging everyone to sing and dance along with them.

During "Do You Wanna Touch Me," she had the audience sing "oh yeah" with her, where video footage of The BLACKHEARTS in Coney Island were played in the background. She reminded everyone to take "breaths" in this performance.

They continued with the fan-favorite and upbeat tune "Bad Reputation," where she complimented the fans on their vocals, for doing a "nice job." "Thank you very much," she said.

"My first band were The RUNAWAYS. Yeah! We persisted," she said, and paid homage to them by singing "You Drive Me Wild," which was the first song that they ever wrote. Cherie Currie, the original lead singer of The RUNAWAYS, would have been beaming with pride over this soaring rendition.

Equally impressive was her superb version of Bruce Springsteen's "Light of Day," where they had everybody clapping along, with a neat ocean background, and images of a young JOAN JETT.

"Love Is Pain" was infectious, which she sang with angst and heart, as psychedelic images displayed on the screen. KENNY LAGUNA (who played keyboards) went on to dedicate "Love Is All Around" to their friend Mary, who was "important to them," thus implying the late Mary Tyler Moore. They were able to dust off the Sonny Curtis original and give it a refreshing, rocking twist.

It was followed by a powerhouse performance of their chart-topping single "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," while "Crimson & Clover" had killer guitar solos, and they incorporated it as a controlled, audience sing-along in the end, with a sold-out venue singing the backing vocals of the chorus, as red and yellow lights dimmed from the stage.

They had the crowd clapping along on the spitfire "I Hate Myself for Loving You." "Thank you Jones Beach. Have a great time with Boston," Jett said. "We really appreciate it," she added, prior to sharing that they were able to squeeze in one more song, and that was the lengthy "Everyday People."

"Take these lyrics to heart," Jett said, and she introduced her gifted band, The BLACKHEARTS. Following the warm reception of "Everyday People," the rock queen concluded, "Thank you very much New York."

Long Island music fan Jake Hugues remarked, "The concert was awesome. It was great. Joan is an inspiration!"

The Verdict
Overall, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS put on a marvelous live performance at the Jones Beach Theater on Long Island. Their aura really captivated the venue, to the point where they transformed it to "Joan's Beach," with their catchy vocals and prowess in guitar doing all the talking. Jett had the Long Island audience in the palm of her hand, as they knew they were in the presence of a rock and roll goddess. This year, their televised videos and graphics took the show to a whole new level from a production standpoint. Their live concert garnered an A+ rating.
