Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson confirmed Thursday afternoon that deputies and medics were dispatched to Paisley Park around 9:43 a.m. CT, where they found the singer unresponsive in an elevator. In the late 1980s, Tipper Gore, then the wife of politician Al Gore, reportedly co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center after she heard his explicit single Darling Nikki. TV networks are planning specials over the coming days on the life and legacy of music icon Prince, who died earlier today at his home outside Minneapolis.

My favorite Prince song? Al Gore of Tennessee, heard one of her daughters listening to Prince's "Darling Nikki".

He released his debut album, For You, in 1978, followed by Prince (1979), Dirty Mind (1980) and Controversy (1981).

His second album, the self-titled "Prince", features his first major hit, "I Wanna Be Your Lover", which establishes his funk-infused style and sexually charged lyrics.

The music critic noted that Prince showed off his new guitar, but didn't perform with it.

He fought a battle with Warner Bros. over the rights to his music, leading to him performing as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince for some time.

There's a line in Prince's "1999" - from his 1982 album of the same name - about how life is just a party, and parties weren't meant to last.

1984 - The film, "Purple Rain", a rock drama starring Prince, is released. He made an iconic return to the Grammys in 2004, not only taking on his own hits like "Purple Rain" but also teaming up with Beyonce for "Crazy in Love". "So he picked me up in his limo and got in the back seat, and he asked, 'How are you?' And I said, 'Scared to death.' He said, 'Don't worry, don't worry'".

"His music was kind of rooted in funk, it was rooted in rock and roll, it was rooted in psychedelic rock, in top 40 pop, in soundtracks", he said. A million copies are sold.

He was regarded as a perfectionist who from 1993 to 2000 changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in an apparent protest against his record label at the time.

Prince won a total of seven Grammys and one Academy Award throughout his decades-spanning career.

A year later, Prince wrote, directed and starred in "Graffiti Bridge", a sort-of sequel to "Purple Rain".

The owners of the downtown Minneapolis nightclub where Prince's "Purple Rain" was filmed are holding an all-night dance party in his honor. Prince originally wrote the song for Patrice Rushen but ended up recording the song himself and putting it on his 1979 self-titled album.
