Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015: A look at the potential nominees to be announced in October

CLEVELAND, Ohio â€" The nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2015 will be revealed at some point in October. Let the debate begin.

In 2014, KISS finally went from perennial nominee to inductee. Grunge-rock pioneer Nirvana made it on its first ballot. And Hall and Oates came out of nowhere to enter Rock's hallowed ground.

So where does that leave us for next year? Throughout the next few weeks, we will look at the possible nominees for 2015. We will once again debate the validity of hip-hop, the veteran acts that could finally get in and a few first time nominees that that deserve serious consideration.

Perhaps the best way to look at potential nominees is to look at lists from previous years. Here is a breakdown of performer nominees from the last five years:

Nominated for 2010 induction
ABBA, Darlene Love, Donna Summer, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, KISS, Laura Nyro, LL Cool J, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Chantels, The Hollies, The Stooges

2011
Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, Beastie Boys, Chic, J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits, Chuck Willis

2012
Beastie Boys, The Cure, Donovan, Eric B. & Rakim, Guns N' Roses, Heart, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rufus With Chaka Khan, The Small Faces/The Faces, The Spinners, Donna Summer, War

(The Rock Hall also had a special 2012 induction of previously overlooked backing groups: The Blue Caps, The Comets, The Crickets, The Famous Flames, The Midnighters, and The Miracles)

2013
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Heart, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Albert King, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, Randy Newman, N.W.A, Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Rush, Donna Summer.

2014
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates KISS, LL Cool J, The Meters, Nirvana, N.W.A., The Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, Link Wray, Yes, The Zombies

Those lists set the stage going forward. Here's what to expect in the coming weeks:
Long overdue
JOAN JETT is hot right now. She's had her name associated with the Rock Hall during the past year both at the AP Music Awards in July, which took place right outside the Rock Hall, and at the 2014 induction ceremony, performing alongside the remaining members of Nirvana.

LL Cool J, Eric B. and Rakim and N.W.A. have been the hip-hop acts that have remained present on the list of nominees over the past half-decade. Eric B. and Rakim is probably one of the most under-appreciated hip-hop acts in history. LL Cool J's hosting duties with the Grammys can't hurt in keeping him fresh in the mind of Rock Hall voters. N.W.A. has been nominated each of the past two years, has a film biopic in the works and its most significant member, Dr. Dre, pretty much owns the music universe.

Pioneering hard rock act Deep Purple has finished near the top of the Rock Hall's fan vote the past two years. With the massive fan bases of Rush and KISS already satisfied, much of that support could swing Deep Purple's way. The same goes for Chic, an act that has been nominated a few times in recent years and meets the Rock Hall's criteria of significance and influence. Founding member Nile Rodgers' Grammy-winning work with Daft Punk and Pharrell only helps his case.
Newbies
Here is a look at newly eligible acts you can take seriously in terms of getting nominated for 2015 induction: Green Day and Nine Inch Nails. Green Day is a shoe-in and will be the first band to ride the Nirvana wave of popular 1990s rock bands entering the Rock Hall. NIN may be a littler iffier, but everything Trent Reznor does these days only adds to his already impressive resume.

Predictions
It's nearly impossible to predict how the Rock Hall nominations will play out. There are always a few relatively obscure bands that make the cut. There are also acts that have been on the ballot in previous years that tend to pop up randomly. But here's a shot in the dark:

Bon Jovi
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Chic
Deep Purple
Green Day
JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
Kraftwerk
Link Wray
The Marvelettes
Nine Inch Nails
N.W.A.
Yes
Some of these selections are a gut feeling that come from recent nominees and trends. And maybe I'm just living on a prayer when it comes to Bon Jovi.

Don't forget to check back throughout the week to debate some of the individual nominees.
