Rock lover with a 'Bad Rep'
from: ocala.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT was not granting interviews this month, which is a shame. I would have loved to catch up with the leather-clad rocker whose raw, pop-punk anthems cut through the hoaky synthesizers of the 1980s.

As the front woman for the all-girl, full-steam-ahead band The RUNAWAYS, Jett the solo artist carried real, snarling rock 'n' roll from the 1970s into the 1980s. Seems she didn't give a "damn 'bout her bad reputation," and that attitude was refreshing in the early 1980s.

In 1982, her version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" loitered at the top of the charts for months. As did Olivia Newton-John's "Physical." It was an odd time.

Jett still tours and records, and her iconic catalogue continues to surface in all corners of pop culture.

She is slated to perform Saturday at Silver Springs. Make no mistake, that is a very big deal.

The park has been mixing old-school rock acts in with its country line-ups in recent years, and Jett is this season's rock 'n' roll anchor.

"I'll be there with my black leather wrist bands on and my raccoon eyeliner," noted Ocalan Krista Gyenge.

On a personal level, I really wanted to interview Jett to settle a long-running debate between me and a college friend: Which one of us was Jett looking at when she seductively licked her lips during the UCF concert in 1988?

I, of course, contend she was looking me, but the fact is, she was doing a lot of lip licking and snarling that night. She is a rocker with leather wrist bands and a bad-girl persona, so I would imagine the same debate rages among many UCF alums to this day.
