JOAN JETT to play fundraiser at Levitt Pavilion in Bethlehem
from: mcall.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable The queen of punk rock will play Levitt Pavilion at SteelStacks in Bethlehem next month, but the audience won't be just raising its fists for her music. It will be raising funds for a cause.

JOAN JETT, who started the proto-punk band The RUNAWAYS and had the No. 1 hit "I Love Rock 'n' Rock" and eight other Top 40 hits with her band The BLACKHEARTS, will perform at 7 p.m. May 4 as headliner at the 26th annual MDA Ride for Life event. It runs May 4-5 at SteelStacks.

The event is for people taking part in Ride For Life, in which participants raise money through pledges, donations, sales and other activities. Anyone can become a participant; details are on the website http://www.rideforlife.org or can be had by calling the local MDA office, 610-557-4403.

Admission tickets for the two-day event are $40, with those under age 16 admitted free when accompanied by an adult Ride for Life participant.

The event also is selling tickets to the concert only. They are available, also for $40, from Eastern Harley-Davidson Dealers Association, a group of 28 dealerships in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, northern Virginia and southern New York.

Participating dealerships include Keystone Harley-Davidson in Parryville; Classic Harley-Davidson in Reading; Dean's Harley-Davidson in Sellersville; Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson/Buell in Orwigsburg; Schoch's Harley-Davidson in Stroudsburg; and Brian's Harley-Davidson/Buell in Langhorne.

In addition to the concert, there will be food, games, other entertainment and an auction and, of course, motorcycle rides. The second day will start with a motorcycle parade.

Jett co-headlined with fellow 1980s rockers The B-52s at the main stage of Bethlehem's Musikfest festival in 2009, drawing a crowd of 5,000. Capacity on the Levitt lawn is about 2,500.

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is among Billboard magazine's Top 30 songs ever, and Rolling Stone magazine in 2003 put Jett among the Top 100 guitarists of all time -- one of only two women on the list (Joni Mitchell is the other).

She also had the Top 10 songs "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and a cover of Tommy James & The Shondells' "Crimson and Clover," and radio hits "Do You Want to Touch Me" and "Everyday People."

Jett also has starred in movies and owns her own record company, and her songs still show up in movies and on TV. The RUNAWAYS' story was the subject of a movie in 2010, with "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart playing Jett.

Though not a part of the formal Levitt Pavilion schedule, Jett's concert will open the third year of the Levitt. No outdoor festivals are scheduled at the Levitt until the start of the RiverJazz festival on May 9.

The Levitt Pavilion website, http://www.levittsteelstacks.org, says the full lineup is "coming soon" and that concerts will be Thursdays through Saturdays, May 24 to Sept. 21. Last year, Levitt announced in March its 53-show season that kicked off with a May 26 show by blues rockers the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

The Levitt's 41-show, abbreviated first season started July 2 with boogie-blues rocker Marcia Ball in 2011.

The Levitt Pavilion is part of the national Levitt Pavilions network of free outdoor music venues, built and supported by the Mortimer Levitt Foundation and community partners. The foundation, based in Norfolk, Va., requires at least 15 free concerts a year and 10 children's programs a year.
