A Jett set at the York Fair

low resolution image Not Enlargeable York, PA - JOAN JETT's reputation preceded her Tuesday at the York Fair. Fans gathered to gossip about her hours before she hit the grandstand stage with the BLACKHEARTS.

Jett's tough-girl image and raspy voice captured Springfield Township resident Anna Farr's attention.

"She's a strong woman who I idolize," Jessika Muller said, pinching a cigarette smeared with red lipstick between her fingers. "She shreds and sings." Muller and her twin sister, Joanna Miller, donned matching Jett T-shirts and drove three hours to the fair to celebrate their 32nd birthdays a few days early.

Kimmi Barnhill of Rockville, Md., was inspired by Jett's career. Born Joan Marie Larkin in a Philadelphia suburb, Jett formed The RUNAWAYS as a teen and hasn't stopped rocking.

All-female bands are still rare, so Barnhill sported RUNAWAYS' lyrics on her arm to show solidarity.

Steve Mittell of Mount Laurel, N.J., talked about the time he saw Jett 23 years ago with a bunch of his Navy buddies.

"She was wild," he said, grinning from ear to ear.

Tuesday marked the 12th time John Zobel of Harrisburg saw Jett in concert. "She puts on a heck of a show," he said.

Jett didn't deny her "Bad Reputation" when she walked onto the stage just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. She opened the show with the hit tune.

Cellphone lights dotted the grandstand seats, but the vintage set turned the clock back to the 1980s.

Jett didn't look much different. Even though she'll celebrate her 53rd birthday Sept. 22, she can still pull off a mischievous grin and leather lace-up jumpsuit. During a "wardrobe malfunction" mid-set, she didn't miss a beat.

She powered through tunes, including the first song she ever wrote, "Go Home," and "Light of Day" -- the title track written by Bruce Springsteen for a 1987 movie starring Jett and Michael J. Fox.

"We're here to have fun," she told the crowd, daring them to get louder. Jett's reputation remained intact as screams disturbed the peace of the late-summer evening.
