JOAN JETTÕs Runaway heart
from: citylinkmix.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Before the RUNAWAYS ripped into the underground music scene in 1975, an all-girl rock group never stood a chance. Now, a biopic on the badass teenage band that featured JOAN JETT and Lita Ford will hit theaters March 19. While she's no longer selling CDs from the trunk of her Cadillac, Jett remains that raw rock legend who's still willing to empty her soul into a microphone and strum the strings off an electric Gibson Melody Maker whether there are 20 or 20,000 people watching. She's coming to Jupiter this Saturday to play a benefit concert for Safe Harbor's 23rd Annual Celebrity Dog Wash Festival with her band, the BLACKHEARTS. And, she told me in a recent interview, she'd be happy to wash a dog after her sound check.

How did you prep Kristen Stewart to play you in The RUNAWAYS?
We didn't have a lot of time to prepare, so I think she did some of it on her own. I gave her some CDs to listen to of the RUNAWAYS original music. I spoke to her for several hours about how I felt about the RUNAWAYS, what it meant to me. I gave her details I probably wouldn't tell most people. And then, she spent a lot of time just observing me while we were physically together. She watched my posture and the way I move through space and she sort of assimilated all that into her.

What do you think of the film?
I think it definitely gives you a sense of what we went through, what it was like to be in a band at that time Ñ certainly an all-girl band and what we were doing. The actors did a really great job and I'm excited to introduce the RUNAWAYS to a lot of people that probably don't know much about it.

What's on the set list for Saturday?
We'll being doing all the hits and a lot of songs off our latest CD, SINNER. And we'll be doing some songs from the RUNAWAYS.

Will you ever do your own fashion line?
There could be something in the future. We'll see what happens.

If a woman wanted to snag JOAN JETT's style, what's your top tip?
The JOAN JETT style? God, I always just think of myself as a jeans and T-shirt kind of person. But for me, a lot of it's in the hair. Maybe start with a shag.

Are you working on any new material?
I'm always trying to write new songs and I'm finishing a couple right now. We have a greatest-hits CD coming out March 9. I'm really excited about that. I selected the songs that will be on that.

Is there any song from your career that's a favorite to perform?
Not really. I get a kick out of playing them all. They elicit different responses in different places, and so I have a really hard time choosing favorites. I'm not a list person. I'm not a Top 10 favorite person. I just can't pick favorites.

Are you into any new bands?
I haven't really heard much new stuff. I'm still listening to the stuff I grew up on, like T. Rex, David Bowie, the Ramones, Fugazi, Bikini Kill. Then, there are a million singles from when I was a kid I liked to listen to, like "All Right Now" by Free. Then, I like anything by Led Zeppelin and all the Rolling Stones' stuff."

You walked as a model in one of Cynthia Steffe's runway shows. Is modeling something you might try again?
I think it was the year Cynthia based her line on my look. I was actually bald that year, so it was really interesting. I think I was wearing a dress and a hat and all the models were wearing hats. It was different and it was interesting, but not really the most comfortable situation for me to be in. I don't know that I'd really love to do it Ñ I'm not really a model type. I'm not tall enough to make the clothes look the way they're supposed to."

I just want to thank you for having the name Joan. Since I share a name with you, it stopped me from getting teased as a kid.
Yeah, that's always good. You know, it's an old-time name. But when people spell it Jone Ñ that's for people who don't know how to spell and have never saw the name before so they're just phonetically sounding it out, which is frightening."
