Arts, Beats & Eats expands food and kids' offerings
from: detnews.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Arts, Beats & Eats: Oakland County's Festival of Hope -- which runs Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-7 in downtown Pontiac -- has announced its competed music lineup, a revamped list of participating restaurants and its expanded kids' programming.

"The show has just really rounded out nicely," says event producer Jon Witz. "Our goal is to satisfy all tastes and have quality acts at a great value." This year the big names on the Michigan Lottery Stage include '90s rockers Candlebox, rock 'n' roll mainstay JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, R&B powerhouse Angie Stone and rock group Puddle of Mudd. Witz says the festival will announce two more national acts soon.

Arts, Beats & Eats also features four other stages of local music featuring many bands that play year after year, including the Muggs, Impact 7, the Reefermen, Broadzilla and the Orbitsuns. Some fresh local groups on this year's schedule include Octopus, Prussia, Charlie Slick and Champions of Breakfast. Arts, Beats & Eats has amped up its eats this year as well. The list of restaurants features upscale offerings, and a more diverse selection including more ethnic and kosher options.

"Having Forte, Tribute, Sangria and other big names really represents our goal, which is to have dynamic tastes that are free of carnival trailers and instead represent restaurants and caterers from the Metro Detroit area," says Witz. "Forte and Tribute are even creating an outdoor cafŽ and bringing in live entertainment, dŽcor, special items -- it'll be almost 5,000 square feet." Witz also pointed out that no food or drink item (including beer and mixed drinks) will exceed $5. Food tickets cost $10 for 16 tickets or $5 for eight tickets. No item will cost more than eight tickets.

The festival's Kids Zone will include puppet shows, magic shows, clowns, live children's music and appearances by stars of PBS shows "Super Why" and "Arthur." Witz says he's proud that one of the new components to the Kids Zone is the accommodations that will be made to special needs children and programming that promotes special needs awareness to parents and children.

As for the arts, there will be a juried fine arts show and a new component called Sights & Sounds at Arts, Beats and Eats, which will feature up-and-coming artists in the realms of music, film and visual art.

This year, Arts, Beats & Eats will charge $2 admission, with the exception of certain hours on Free Friday, Sept. 4. Aside from the low cost of food and drinks, the festival also will offer free bottled water and carnival rides from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 5-7.
