Fleet Week has been the city's way of celebrating the sea services nearly every year since 1984. It provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see, first-hand, the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.

Although the Hard Rock opens their doors for this event and the troops every year, it was an exciting experience for newcomers to Fleet Week.

"I have been to Fleet Week Fort Lauderdale, but this is my first time in New York," said Damage Controlman 2nd Class David Logan.

When it came to the concert, Logan expresses his opinion on who he believes is a real hero.

"The show was absolutely amazing," he said. "They call us heroes, but she (JOAN JETT) is my hero, so being here to see her perform was just awesome for me!"

After Jett's performance and several encores, she took a moment to express her appreciation to those attending the show.

"Being able to come to perform for all of the service members was such an honor, and I see it as my way of giving back," said Jett. "I feel such a great deal of appreciation to each man and woman that serves in our military today. What they do for our country just means so much!"

Washington Redskins Cheerleaders also showed their support to the men and women in uniform by performing cheers to popular rock songs.

"Our squad has been performing the Hard Rock show for the troops for more than five years now," said Redskins Cheerleader Lacie Randall. "We prepare all year for various performances, but I can say with confidence that this is the entire squad's favorite event."

Approximately 3,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will participate in the 22nd commemoration of Fleet Week New York from May 20 to 27.

In addition to public visitation of participating ships, there will be a number of exhibits highlighting technology of the maritime services and the skilled expertise of our service members.
