"The first (announced) acts reflect what we anticipate the lineup to look like when it's complete; a wide range of accomplished acts spanning several decades starting with classic rock from the 1970s and '80s and moving forward to current charting artists," festival chairman Bryon Mazade said in a prepared statement.

"Not all genres are included in this first release," said Mazade. "But we anticipate more acts being confirmed quickly. Once the lineup is done, we think people will consider our 11-day pass at under $100 one of the biggest entertainment values at any festival this summer."

The festival intends to hold the price for 11-day passes at $99 and reduce the cost of single-day tickets so none will be more than $29 per night, festival Executive Director Joe Austin previously announced.

Summer Celebration organizers earlier this month acknowledged that this year's event is a critical one for the future of the Muskegon area's biggest festival -- now in its 17th year.

In early March, festival officials had to ask the Muskegon City Commission for more time to repay a $69,150 debt they still owed the city for last year's police and public works services.

The commission approved the plan, which calls for $20,000 to be repaid by June 1 and the remainder by Sept. 30.

Austin said that though the 11-day festival passes sold out last year, rising rates for main-stage acts and a reduction in the sale of single-day tickets resulted in a deficit. The festival's $3.4 million budget came up $200,000 short in 2008, Austin said.

Counting Crows, an alternative rock band, is scheduled to perform July 1. Festival officials say, according to surveys they conducted, last summer's high gas prices discouraged many people from attending the festival. Gas prices last summer hovered in the $4-plus-per-gallon range.

Organizers aren't sure how much impact Michigan's weak economy and high unemployment rate will have on this summer's festival attendance. But, it appears organizers are relying on a similar formula that has also brought them many years of prior success -- a combination of classic rock and country performances.

The following is a look at the musical acts announced:
¥ Often referred to as the "Godmother of Punk," Jett and her group, the BLACKHEARTS, scored a smash hit with their hit cover, "I Love Rock N' Roll," in 1982. Other hits were: "Crimson and Clover," "Light of Day," and "Bad Reputation."

Barenaked Ladies is scheduled to perform June 28.

Jett also has had a successful acting career, and has appeared in numerous TV shows, movies and in a 2000 Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show, where she played the role of Columbia.

¥ The Canadian rock group Loverboy also scored numerous hits during the 1980s, including the singles "Turn Me Loose" and "Working for the Weekend."

Jamey Johnson will perform June 29.
¥ Together since 1988, the Barenaked Ladies, are best known for their hit singles, "One Week," "Pinch Me," and "Brian Wilson."

¥ The Berkeley, Calif.-based Counting Crows gained its first taste of popularity in 1994, with the hit, "Mr. Jones," which was included in the group's debut album, "August and Everything After."

¥ The 32-year-old Aldean has enjoyed enormous success with his first two country releases, 2005's "Jason Aldean," and 2007's, "Relentless." His third CD, "Wide Open," is scheduled for release April 7.

¥ Despite garnering a top 20 country hit with his first single "The Dollar," Johnson was dropped from his first record label in 2006. He rebounded by signing with Mercury Nashville Records in 2008, and released his second album, "That Lonesome Song," which delivered the top 10 country hit, "In Color." He's also written hit songs for George Strait, John Michael Montgomery, Trace Adkins and Joe Nichols.
