'Music and Motorcycles' at Harley-Davidson
from: Newsday.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Can you name at least two things JOAN JETT, Billy Joel, Twisted Sister's Dee Snider and DMC of Run DMC have in common?

They've all been inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, and they're all big motorcycle fans.

A shared passion for music and motorcycles is the focus of a four-day "Music and Motorcycles" exhibit, presented by Long Island Music Hall of Fame and Lighthouse Harley-Davidson, that puts Joel's line of custom-designed Harleys and other bikes on public display.

MUSIC, HOGS AND LI

Motorcycles have been linked to rock music since its early days on Long Island. If you listen closely, you can hear bike engines revving in the background on the chart-topping recording of "Leader of the Pack," performed by the 1960s girl group The Shangri-Las and co-written and produced by songwriter George "Shadow" Morton, who grew up in Bethpage.

The tune was later covered by Twisted Sister, the band fronted by Long Island native Dee Snider. Morton also is a Long Island Music Hall of Fame inductee.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Visitors to Lighthouse Harley-Davidson will get to see several of Joel's custom "20th Century Cycles" (think vintage style meets new technology), including an autographed red, white and chrome 2005 HD Springer Classic that has the look of a motorcycle from the 1940s, as well as others that he collaborated with the dealer to build in the store's basement fabrication shop.

Organizers say Snider and Twisted Sister bandmate Mark "The Animal" Mendoza, from West Hempstead, also have agreed to loan one of their motorcycles for display at the exhibit.

The event also will feature memorabilia from other Long Island Music hall-of-famers who also are big motorcycle fans - namely DMC of Run DMC and C.J. Ramone of The Ramones.

A motorcycle gas tank signed by inductees and celebrities, including Jett, Snider, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Gary U.S. Bonds and Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals also will be shown. Visitors will get to see an autographed T-shirt from Joel's last show at Shea Stadium, which will be auctioned off later on eBay to raise money for the hall of fame's mission and programs.

Joe Rock, a DJ on WBAB/ 102.3 FM and vice chairman of the hall of fame's board of directors, wants Long Islanders, especially kids, to appreciate the indelible imprint Long Island and Long Islanders have made on the New York music scene and the industry as a whole. "They are coming to see Long Island pride," Rock says.

KIDS DAY

The exhibit culminates on Saturday with "Kids Day." It will feature musical performances by the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Choir, from noon to 1 p.m., as well as interactive workshops for kids.

The first workshop (1:30 to 2:30 p.m.) will be led by hall-of-famer Jimmy Rosica of Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge, who founded the Very Cool Music School. The other (3 to 4 p.m.) will include student performers from the Paul Green School of Rock Music in Melville.

The Huntington Sam Ash Music Store also plans to set up an "instrument petting zoo" for kids to try bongos, shakers, blocks and other percussion instruments.
