JOAN JETT coming to UNI
Rock legend will perform Oct. 31

from: northern-iowan.org

She has been a pop star since the age of 15. She has built a stellar career on classic hits like "I Love Rock N' Roll" and "Bad Reputation." Her BLACKHEARTS Record Label produces some of the best indie rock of today and she is coming to the University of Northern Iowa on Halloween night. She has left her mark on pop culture forever, but the majority of the students here at UNI don't know who she is.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will be performing at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. Jett's success and musical style has influenced a myriad of contemporary acts. Not only has she succeeded in the rock n' roll industry, she has succeeded in a field dominated by men, a rare feat in punk circles.

Jett founded her first band, the RUNAWAYS in her teen years. The RUNAWAYS were an all-girl punk rock band influenced by other acts like The Ramones and The Kinks.

When Jett began her solo career, she formed her current band, the BLACKHEARTS. With this band, she has released eight gold-selling albums and had nine singles reach the Billboard Top 40. With the help of producer KENNY LAGUNA, she became the first woman to start her own record label. Jett won a sought-after role in the 1987 film "Light of Day" with Michael J. Fox and in 2000 performed on Broadway in "The Rocky Horror Show."

The BLACKHEARTS burst onto the scene first in 1980 with their self-titled album. Jett and Laguna independently produced and released the album, building their fortune themselves. After some success in Europe, the album was re-released as "Bad Reputation" in the States, which was closely followed by Jett's most famous album, "I Love Rock N' Roll." The title track was the number-one song for seven weeks in a row in 1982, and is still a very popular and well-known song today. The BLACKHEARTS cemented their spot in music history with a string of hit albums such as 1986's "Good Music," 1991's "Notorious" and 2006's "SINNER."

Many musicians emulated Jett's free-wheeling punk rock style during the '80s and '90s. Her success has paved the ways for many female musicians in a variety of rock sub-genres, such as pop-rock girl group The Donnas and nu-metal act Kittie. Artists like No Doubt and Bikini Kill have followed The BLACKHEARTS formula, building success on girl power and punk music. Jett has also moonlighted as a producer for Bikini Kill and The Germs.

After all this success and notoriety, one must wonder how JOAN JETT is not a more renowned name. Someone this widely known to our parents seems to have vanished between the generation shift. Hopefully, you will take this opportunity to acquaint yourself with The BLACKHEARTS' music. Fans of current mainstream rock such as Fall Out Boy, The Donnas, Anberlin or Finger Eleven will find many of Jett's songs enjoyable. All music fans should consider this opportunity, even if you're parents want to tag along!

Ticket prices for students vary from $20 to $60.
