Today's trivia: In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the Top 100 guitar players of the rock 'n' roll era.
from: Houston Chronicle

Jimi Hendrix was No. 1. Carlos Santana was No. 15.

Only two women made the list. Who were they?

Trivia answer: Joni Mitchell was No. 72 and JOAN JETT was No. 87.

Last Saturday, I went to the Woodlands Pavilion to see Jett perform. She was amazing.

Except for a couple of hit singles, like I Love Rock 'n' Roll, I really wasn't familiar with JOAN JETT until I saw her perform on the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this year.

She did Bits and Pieces to honor the Dave Clark 5 and absolutely tore the place apart. She played 10 times louder and harder than anybody else on the show. Then she led an all-star group of John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Billy Joel and David Letterman's house band in doing Glad All Over, and that was even louder than Bits and Pieces.

I thought, next time Jett comes to Houston, I'm going.

Last Saturday night, she was part of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors tour, with the B-52s, comic Wanda Sykes and several other acts. The tour celebrates diversity, and let's just say the audience was a trifle diverse. Good for Lauper.

Jett was amazing. First, she's almost 50 years old and she wore a tiny bikini top and low-slung leather pants. Her body is ripped, not an ounce of flab anywhere, and I was looking. She's got tattoos all over and she looked sweaty and nasty and really pretty at the same time. I generally don't like women who can beat me up, but this was different.

She was onstage for about 45 minutes and played probably 15 songs. She wasn't there to talk or go on forever with guitar solos. Somehow I recognized most of them, like Cherry Bomb, Crimson and Clover, I Hate Myself For Loving You. I must be a bigger Jett fan than I realized.

She's a vegetarian. The Gibson guitar company just created a JOAN JETT model guitar. She is constantly performing for U.S. troops at war in the Middle East. This is nothing new for her. She's been touring for the USO for two decades. Before the show, I asked her, "What was it like performing the Dave Clark 5's hits at the Hall of Fame ... with the Dave Clark 5 sitting right there in the front row?"

She said, "It wasn't nerve-wracking because I recorded Bits and Pieces on an album 25 years ago. It was just exciting and the biggest honor for me to do it at the ceremony. I think Bits and Pieces is a great rock song and it was wonderful to meet Dave Clark and the other members of the group. It was a little sad, of course, because of couple of the guys are dead, but I still loved doing the songs."
