JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS
from: femmefatale4160.livejournal.com

Before I get to the good part, let me tell you how I found out about the concert.

A few weeks ago at school, my friends and I were sitting in the cafeteria, packing up for the end of the lunch period. Lauren waited until the others had left, then she asked me what I was doing the day after Thanksgiving. I said that I didn't have plans, and she tells me, "You're going to a JOAN JETT concert." I kissed her, I really did. I absolutely could not believe it. JOAN JETT is only the greatest chick rocker who ever lived.

The only problem was that the concert was at Northern Lights, a 21 and over club. We had to find someone to take us. But being ecstatic teenage girls, we took it for granted that we would be able to go. Pretty soon it's the day before Thanksgiving and Lauren tells me that we can't go. Her parents wouldn't take us, our friend Sam's parents wouldn't take us, my dad DEFINITELY wouldn't take us, and my mom was going out of town. "If I was going to be in town, it wouldn't be a problem," my mom said. Way to make it all better.

Friday morning, I woke up early and went to go check my emails. There was one from Lauren, with a subject that read "guess what." There could only be one thing, and sure enough..."We're going to JOAN JETT! Call me later and I'll give you the details."

I called her three times before she finally answered. Her dad had agreed to take us, admission was $10.27, and tell my dad I'd be home around 10:30. I was ecstatic. After six wardrobe changes in ten minutes, I finally decided on black velvet pants, an embroidered cami, and a black shrug. I threw my makeup in my purse, along with much more money than I needed, and my dad dropped me off at Lauren's. We put on our makeup while we waited for Sam, and pretty soon we were off.

The doors to the club opened at 7, which is when we arrived. But the line was already very long. After waiting for an hour, we were frisked, my purse was searched, we were stamped with an "X" on both hands, notifying everyone that we were underage, and then we were in.

We pushed our way to the front of the crowd--close enough to see Joan's individual eyelashes. Unfortunately, we were off to the side...right next to the speakers. My ears are still ringing. After standing there with our feet killing us for another hour, the opening act started. The band was called Vincent Black Shadow, and I loved them. Sam and Lauren did too--the music was good, and the band members were very entertaining.

Then, after 45 minutes of opening act and a fifteen minute break...drumroll please...

The BLACKHEARTS, followed by the JOAN JETT herself, walked onto the stage. Her microphone was no more than seven feet away from us. She looks amazing--she's not just in great shape for a 48 year-old, she's in great shape period. She has an incredible smile, it's so infectious and it lights up her whole face. She sounds exactly the same in person as she does on the radio, which is rare nowadays. She sang a few of her old classics, like "I Love Rock and Roll," "Cherry Bomb," and "I Hate Myself for Loving You." She also sang several songs off of her brand new album, SINNER. She sang two encore songs, and Sam got the set list she had kept on the stage.

After the show, it was past 11:30. I called my dad to tell him I was on my way home, and that there hadn't been service inside (which was true). In fact, I hadn't been able to properly enjoy the concert because I knew my dad would be worried. But still, it was incredible. Lauren and I got matching tanks tops. They're white, with a black-and-white picture of Joan with her guitar, and "JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS" written in red.

The only not-so-great aspect of the evening was a completely wasted woman who got rather, erm, friendly with Lauren and I. She put her arms round our waists and rubbed our sides--I wanted to throw up. Her eyes were glazed over and everything. She even rubbed Sam's back.

Drunken lady aside, the evening was amazing. I got home around midnight, and by 12:30 I was dreaming of the most phenomenal concert I've ever seen.
