The grrrl who loves rock 'n' roll is out to make some new fans
from: The Plain Dealer

Don't be alarmed, kids -- she may be old enough to be your mother, but the snarling woman with the guitar onstage isn't an escapee from the parents tent. Meet original riot grrrl JOAN JETT, who had a string of hits before you were born, including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You." Now she's making the rounds on the Vans Warped Tour with her band, the BLACKHEARTS. Jett, 45, checked in via cell phone last month, en route to a gig in Indianapolis.

How did you end up on the Warped Tour?

[Warped impresario] Kevin Lyman offered us a slot. I thought it would be a lot of fun.

Does the parents tent empty out when you play?

Um, I've heard about the parents tent [laughs]. I haven't seen it yet. So I don't really know about it.

How have you been going over with the crowds?

The audiences have been really responsive. They sing along with the new stuff and the old stuff. Hopefully, we're making some new fans.

The songs on your latest album, "SINNER," touch on everything from social commentary to soul-searching to sex. You seem to have a lot on your mind.

Yeah. It really just reflects life and the complicated times we live in. Not that times weren't always complicated, but I guess from my perspective, you start focusing on different things.

This album has been a long time coming. It's exactly what people would expect from me. It's what I love to do -- basically, three-chord rock 'n' roll. I'm very proud of it.

You signed a Cleveland band, the Vacancies, to your BLACKHEART RECORDS label and produced their album. How did they cross your radar?

They opened a show for us. I don't even know where it was. This was a few years ago. I thought they were really great. They had catchy punk-rock songs, melodic and very hooky. They were nice guys, too. I told them, "If you guys are gonna put out any music, please send me some." They came up with a bunch of material close to two years ago now. The songs became "A Beat Missing or a Silence Added," which is the CD we put out in November.

Cleveland also is the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. What would it mean to you to be inducted or at least nominated?

[Pause] God, it's such a . . . I don't know. I guess it would definitely be an honor, for sure, if I were nominated or whatever. It would be great. It's kinda hard to say what it would mean. My reward is onstage every night. To me, that's more important. I guess if and when it happens, I'd have a better response for you.
