80’s Punk Icon JOAN JETT is Back
from: playfuls.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable 47-years-old JOAN JETT is still (punk) rocking, as she released her 24th album in 2006, "SINNER." JOAN JETT is best known for her hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll," which was #1 on the Billboard charts from March 20 to May 8 of 1982.

Jett and her BLACKHEARTS band have also just embarked on a tour, the Vans Warped Tour. The Warped Tour is essentially a punk bands’ tour, and as such she has colleagues who are about half her age throughout the 10-stage tour.

"It's amazing," she says of Warped, talking before the show in a hotel lounge. "It's the kind of music I love, and the energy of the show is just great. And there's not a lot of ego-tripping among the bands."

"Oh yeah, man, we’re having a blast. It’s such a great relaxed vibe - a rolling block party, punk-rock circus. The camaraderie between the bands is amazing. We all hang out, have barbecues, talk about music" she told The Boston Herald.

All the acts, from Jett’s to current big-sellers like AFI, get to play for only 30 minutes each. "She's out here mentoring people, showing bands like [Margate's] Shiragirl that she's been doing it for all these years, that you can't give up," says Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman.

"SINNER," released on her own BLACKHEART RECORDS label, starts off with a Bush-bashing protest song, her first swing at a political song.

On "SINNER," she covers Paul Westerberg's "Androgynous," and plays around with songs like "Everyone Knows," which is about having a preference for bondage gear. "I was a huge Bowie fan and I always respected that he embraced both sides of himself," she says. "I'm a girl, but I'm not a frilly girl and I've never been one. So I tend to walk that line, just down the middle. I embrace my male side, and it doesn't make me feel any less woman at all."

As such, JOAN JETT draws a large crowd of lesbians. Her glam-rock cover of the Sweet's "AC/DC" video features Carmen Electra as Jett's lover. However, she never made a public statement about her sexual orientation.

After appearing on the Warped Tour, Jett plans to kick off her own headlining tour in October with the "Eagles of Death Metal" tentatively slotted as support act.

"I have to prove myself," she says. "Every time. Because I'm a girl that plays rock-and-roll." JOAN JETT feels that "people will really cut down women — really get nasty — for no reason at all, just because you're trying to play music."

JOAN JETT (born Joan Marie Larkin) first gained attention as the guitarist, main songwriter and back-up singer in the pioneering all-girls band "The RUNAWAYS," known for pre-punk hard rock and the classic song "Cherry Bomb." Once lead singer Cherie Currie left the band, Joan assumed the duties of lead vocalist. Although the US was not yet ready for such an act, they were more popular in Japan. "The RUNAWAYS" were disbanded in 1979, and she produced an album for Los Angeles punk rock band, "The Germs," then embarked on a solo career what will put out some 24 albums from 1980’s "JOAN JETT" to 2006’s "SINNER."
