For a $30 ticket, concertgoers can check out some 70 bands on eight stages Sunday when the annual Vans Warped Tour comes to the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park.
Chicago bands the Honour Recital, the Dog and Everything, the Translation and the Treaty of Paris beat out 10,000 bands to get to perform on the Tour stop here as winners of the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands competition.
Considered a vital tour to showcase young and upcoming rock and punk artists and a cultivator of the skateboard culture, Warped also will feature AFI, Against Me!, Less Than Jake, Plain White T's, the Academy Is ..., Rise Against, Underoath, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Gym Class Heroes and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS.
While Warped is known as the country's longest-running touring festival, Jett has her own punk-rock history, dating to the 1970s.
As a teenager in the band the RUNAWAYS, Jett did most of the songwriting.
Her solo career was launched with her punky remakes of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Crimson and Clover" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," all top 20 hits in 1982. For the latter, Jett flashed open a long coat to reveal her itty bitty bikini in the video for MTV that got heavy rotation.
Now, at 45, Jett is likely the oldest artist on the Warped Tour.
And she's diggin' it.
For one, the other bands are cool.
Two, she's playing to new crowds.
Three, though she doesn't admit it, she's really a punk-rock pioneer who's showing the kids how it's done.
"If I don't sweat, I feel like I'm not doing my job," Jett said on the phone from her tour bus traveling from Canada to Minnesota. "I enjoy the heat."
Even for hot outdoor shows, she says, leather and latex are her clothes of choice.
So far, the Warped ride has been cool.
"We're having a blast," she said. "It's a big punk-rock rolling circus. The other bands are so friendly. There are no head trips. It's a relaxed and loose vibe."
Each artists plays a 30-minute set.
Jett said she was a bit surprised to see Warped attendees, from preteens to 30-somethings, singing along to new songs.
"The way everyone's been responding, I think we're making new fans," said Jett, who lives in New York.
Jett & the BLACKHEARTS, including longtime songwriting partner and producer KENNY LAGUNA on keyboards, are touring on the heels of "SINNER," Jett's first studio release in 12 years.
In the fall, they will do a headlining tour. She plans to release another album in 2007.
"SINNER" features collaborations with Linda Perry ("Riddles") and Kathleen Hanna ("Five," "Fetish," "Baby Blue" and "Tube Talkin' "), and a cover of Paul Westerberg's "Androgynous."
The cover of the Sweet track "A.C.D.C." — with lyrics such as "she's got other lovers as well as me" — alludes to something other than heterosexuality. But Jett doesn't talk about her personal life.
"I let my music do the talking," she says.
She will, offer up some words of wisdom for younger artists, however.
"My advice would be to cultivate an audience that'll support you," she said. "Play a lot locally and try to extend out."
Staying in the music industry for decades also is a matter of staying in shape.
"I don't smoke, I don't drink and I don't sit in the sun," she said. "And I've been a vegetarian for 15 years."
Jett, the first woman in rock 'n' roll to own her own record company, said living the life of a rock star isn't simple.
"Too many people think it's easy, but it's not," she said. "It's hard work, struggles, dedication and sacrifice.
"You'll get rejection and you have to decide if it's worth it," she said. "After the RUNAWAYS broke up, I was devastated, but I never contemplated giving up."
