JOAN JETT still doesn’t give a damn about her reputation, but she hopes you like her, regardless.

"It’s hard to look at yourself and try to guess what people see," she said from a Vans Warped Tour stop in Pomona, Calif., during a phone interview. "I just see the girl that plays rock ’n’ roll."

Those attending Vans Warped Tour can see the girl who loves rock ’n’ roll rip the riffs and sing her heart out Aug. 4 at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain. The all-day event features Ms. Jett and her band, The BLACKHEARTS, plus a medley of other punk rock, emo and rock acts including NOFX, Against Me!, Rise Against, The Casualties, Thursday, Saves the Day and ska-scene favorite Less Than Jake.

Ms. Jett — who made her debut in 1976 with The RUNAWAYS — is loving the tour and its artists, many of whom are half her age.

"This is my kind of music," Ms. Jett, 47, said of the tour. "It’s what I grew up listening to."

The original "riot grrrl," a word used to describe females in the rock industry, says the punk rock scene is a world she never left, so when she was offered a spot on Warped Tour — now in its 12th year — she didn’t think twice.

"I just enjoy it," she explained. "It’s a great opportunity to do this traveling punk-rock circus type thing."

Many Warped Tour fans have parents who grew up listening to the Philadelphia-born Ms. Jett, so she said it’s nice to expose herself to a newer generation.

"I guess I’m still relevant," she joked.

Ms. Jett, who now calls New York City home, spends her down time on the tour checking out the other acts and perhaps scouting some for her record label, BLACKHEART RECORDS, which houses her band and past Warped bands The Eyeliners and The Vacancies.

The Warped Tour crowd tends to be diverse with an interesting age range. Ms. Jett said she saw a man "probably in his 70s" crowd surfing during a NOFX set, a band Ms. Jett cites as one of her favorites to play with.

"I love them," she said of the prolific punk band. "Fat Mike (NOFX vocalist and bassist) is always a trip."

Aside from touring, Ms. Jett hosts an underground garage show called "JOAN JETT’s Radio Revolution" on Sirius satellite radio. Her selection includes, but is not limited to bands playing Warped Tour, glam rock, David Bowie, The Ramones and Fugazi.

"Dischord ‘Records’ epitomizes punk," she said of Fugazi’s Washington, D.C., label. And though she thinks highly of the Dischord crew, she says she has no particular favorite band ... or favorite artist she has worked with.

"How can you pick just one?" she asked, recalling her years of collaborations. "Each (collaboration) is in its own special time."

And for this 30-year veteran, time certainly has no bounds.
