Jett's reputation serves her well

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS' motto: Never compromise.

"We've never backed off from the original hard-rock style," said Jett's longtime songwriting partner/producer and former manager, KENNY LAGUNA. "We're trying to do the best thing that sounds like 'wow.' "

One such moment came in 1982, when record-label executives shunned Jett's single "I Love Rock 'N Roll." Laguna said the naysayers didn't think a girl could rock on lead guitar as hard as a guy.

When it was released on the small Boardwalk label, the single went straight to No. 1 and made the former member of the all-girl punk-rock group The RUNAWAYS a superstar.

"Twenty-three record companies said no, and 23 million record-buyers said yes to 'I Love Rock 'N Roll,'" Laguna said.

The song, known for its memorable hook and attitude, is ranked among Billboard's top rock songs of all time. Jett's stripped-down style and leather-clad look became a platform for female rockers to stand on in the 1980s, and today she's a cultural icon in rock music.

Laguna and Jett's 30-year relationship began when Jett was carving out her musical niche.

"She has simple yet strong messages," Laguna said. "Joan has a very narrow view of what's right for her."

The current incarnation of The BLACKHEARTS, which includes Jett on guitar and lead vocals, THOMMY PRICE on drums, DOUGIE NEEDLES on guitar and Enzo Penizzotto on bass, recently released "SINNER," its first studio album in 10 years.

Maybe Jett can share her secrets of a successful, lengthy career with the young acts she will meet on the Vans Warped Tour this summer. It's a chance to discover the next big thing, Laguna said.

"Look for something that's not there yet," he said. "There's 30 bands (on the bill) and six or seven that are going to be humongous."
