Republic of Texas rally roars into Austin
from: austin.bizjournals.com

Austin is about to get a little louder.

The 12th annual Republic of Texas Biker Rally -- which stands to attract more than 200,000 bikers and enthusiasts -- descends on Austin Thursday through Sunday.

The rally, which has an estimated $34.5 million economic impact for Austin, has grown to the largest motorcycle event in Texas and is pushing to become the third largest in the country behind the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Daytona Bike Week in Florida.

As the ROT Rally revs up, area hotels are bracing for impact. Seventy-five percent of the downtown Radisson's available rooms are dedicated to the event this year.

The hotel plans to cater to the bikers, providing them with spray bottles and towels to keep their cycles clean, and two floors of the parking garage are reserved exclusively for bikes.

The hotel has produced a limited edition T-shirt for the rally, and will have a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on display in the lobby throughout the event.

On Friday, in one of the rally's most visible events, an 11-mile convoy of bikes will parade from the Travis County Expo Center to downtown Austin for a 52-block party along Congress Avenue and Sixth Street.

The Downtown Austin Alliance is warning drivers to plan for road closures during the Friday night event.

In downtown Austin, two live music stages will feature music performances from Vallejo, Omar & The Howlers and Van Wilks.

During this year's rally event, spectators can watch as celebrity bike builder Jerry Covington builds a custom chopper from the ground up. The bike will be given away to an active military person.

Also, the Discovery Channel and several other television reality shows are filming throughout the rally to showcase Austin as the Biker Capital of Texas.

Along with the roar of the bikes, music also fills the air for the entire four days. Legendary rocker JOAN JETT opens Saturday night's concert, followed by Paul Rodgers, the original lead singer of Bad Company and now front man for Queen.

Even though the ROT Rally officially closes at noon on Sunday, bikers may find plenty of reasons to stay a little longer at the Expo Center, as Sunday night kicks off Tejano Thunder, featuring Ruben Ramos and Little Joe y La Familia.
