'Warped' concert could attract some 20,000 fans to city

FITCHBURG -- The Vans Warped Tour will stop at the Fitchburg Municipal Airport on Aug. 2, bringing around 20,000 rock music fans to the city, officials say.

The national concert tour has more than 60 bands signed on to play this year, including Saves the Day, NOFX and Thursday, according to the Warped Tour Web site.

The Airport Commission voted Monday to approve the concert plans, Airport Manager Barrett Brown said.

A promoter from MassConcerts has offered to pay $25,000 for use of the airport, Brown said.

"We're always looking for ways to promote the airport and the city of Fitchburg," Brown said.

Concert promoter John Peters previously told the Airport Commission that the concert usually draws 20,000 fans.

Mayor Dan H. Mylott said Tuesday he is glad to see "another reason for people to come to Fitchburg."

The airport has hosted the rock concert Locobazooka for the last three years.

"The city now has a track record of running these things successfully," Mylott said.

Locobazooka drew 10,000 people last September.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Spano said city officials will now begin planning to deal with traffic, parking and sound issues.

But Spano said the size of the concert shouldn't be a dramatic change for the city from Locobazooka.

"It is larger, no doubt about it," Spano said. "But I think the venue can accommodate that many people. Right now I'm not pinpointing anything as a particular problem."

One difference is that Locobazooka has been held on a weekend, while the Warped Tour will come to the airport on a Wednesday, Spano noted.

The Warped Tour has 48 dates scheduled between June 18 and Aug. 15, according to the Warped Tour Web site.

The final scheduled date is in Northampton, where the tour has stopped in previous years.

Other bands include The Casualties, Helmet, The Bouncing Souls, From Autumn to Ashes, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS and the Living End.
