Acclaimed designer Todd Oldham is bringing star power to the power drills of HGTV this fall.

Oldham is headlining his first series for the Home and Garden Channel with "Todd Oldham's Handmade Modern," a five-part décor series with celebrity guests.

The program premiered Sept. 26.

"Handmade" will have the host showing how to create home accessories and furnishings using the colorful and practical ideas inspired by mid-century modern design.

Oldham says some people have the wrong idea about modern furniture, designed in the 1950s and 1960s, as being "too uncomfortable" and "not very practical" with its thin padding and outlandish designs.

Celebrities such as JOAN JETT, Susan Sarandon, Jeffrey Tambor, Elizabeth Berkley and Amy Sedaris will join Oldham in making projects. Most of the guests are friends of Oldham whom he asked to be on the show.

The all-stars were pretty good with their hands, he says.

"When you are a celebrity or a performer, you have to have some confidence in yourself anyway," he says. "If you can stand up and play guitar in front of 10,000, you're going to be confident enough to handle a power saw."

Of the lot, he says, Berkley was "the most inspiring" as a guest.

While Oldham and his stars work on their projects, they engage in small talk that usually drifts away from the work at hand.

Berkley, he says, was "poignant" as she discussed the trials she endured as an actress before landing major roles.

"It was something I never expected from her. We all know her from 'Showgirls,' but she is so much more than that," he says.

Tambor "proclaimed to be the least experienced" among the guests in working with his hands, Oldham says, "but he's far more skilled than he wants to let on."

They made a painting together.

Sarandon, Oldham says, "can do anything she sets her mind to do."

The series is based on Oldham's hit book "Handmade Modern: Mid-Century Inspired Projects For Your Home."

HGTV, oddly, provides a contrast for the rest of Oldham's television career. He's known on the tube for such shows as MTV's "House of Style" and "Crib Crashers."

Why hasn't Oldham starred in his own HGTV series before?

"Because I have been very fortunate in my career, and I am fortunate to be very busy," he says. "Now I have the time, and I think it's a good idea."
