She loves rock 'n' roll

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will headline the Rock 'n' Roll Relief 2005 benefit at Festival Park on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Jett, an internationally-known recording artist who has maintained control over her long career, is expected to draw a huge crowd in what is anticipated to be a sold-out event.

While still in her teens, Jett formed the all-girl rock group, The RUNAWAYS, whose hits such as "Cherry Bomb" made them an international sensation.

She was the first woman in rock to own her own record label, BLACKHEART RECORDS. She and her band, the BLACKHEARTS, recorded the No. 28 song of all time, "I Love Rock n' Roll," which was No. 1 on the Billboard charts for two months after 23 major record labels refused to give her a deal.

She and the band were nominated in 1989 for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Group for "I Hate Myself for Loving You."

Also among the group's widely-acclaimed offerings are: Crimson and Clover; I Hate Myself for Loving You; Do You Want To Touch Me; Little Liar; Light of Day (top ten for the year on MTV in 1987); and Everyday People (top ten urban contemporary 1983).

Jett, also a songwriter, wrote Alice Cooper's House of Fire, as well as three top 10 rap tracks.

She was in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show.

But her talent isn't limited to stages. She starred in the Paul Schrader film Light of Day, with Michael J. Fox, Jason Miller, Gena Rowlands and Michael McKean, as well as appearing in other films.

Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and at 5:30, the special guest opening act will be the popular Red Metric from Hampton Roads. Having a special affinity for the Outer Banks, the band is donating their performance to help jumpstart the hurricane relief fund.

The widely acclaimed Smithereens will follow the opening act with their own hits at 6:45.

And then, the event of the season, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, will take to the stage to perform at 8:15.

Advance tickets for the rain or shine event are $30; day of show price is $40. There will be no refunds, but the proceeds will still go to hurricane relief.
