Smart, fun soundtracks for 'Garden State,' 'Freaks & Geeks'

Ah, the lost art of the soundtrack. The '80s pretty much ruined them, making them collections of potential hits and new-artist samplers tied to the record label instead of conceptual works tied to the film. The two soundtracks below attempt to remedy that, and both are recommended because of it.

"Freaks and Geeks" is a different story entirely, fitting this doomed but smart television show's contrary nature. The "Freaks" soundtrack (Shout Factory, 3 1/2 stars) is entertaining from start to finish. Jump-starting with "Bad Reputation," JOAN JETT's always welcome ode to defiance, "Freaks" is predominately well-chosen classic rock songs by Warren Zevon, Rush, the Who (a great choice in "I'm One") and Styx (yep, it's "Come Sail Away," a crucial song during the show's run). There are also a pair of great early new-wavers from Joe Jackson and XTC (both choices you wouldn't expect) and, in a surprising highlight, Heatwave's R&B/disco number "The Groove Line," one of the better '70s pop hits you don't hear often. The CD also features short, interwoven bits of the score (which sounds more like miniatures of '70s music styles and often are humorous diversions), and a series of tunes at the end featuring the cast themselves (which at least are funny the first go round — thank goodness they are clustered at the end). This cohesive feel makes "Freaks" one of the more interesting soundtracks of the year — for a show that was canceled more than four years ago. Go figure.
