JOAN JETT rocks. Everybody knows it, but how many people know that Jett is rock 'n' roll's answer to James Brown and Bob Hope?
She's the hardest-working woman in show business and "she's the number one noncombatant to be in many of last decade's war zones," said Julie Radar of BLACKHEARTS Records.
Jett has entertained in places like Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq. She's done two tours of Afghanistan, the first one just two months after 9/11. Jett doesn't really like to talk about it, said Radar. She just does it.
ett will bring her blast of road-tested rock 'n' roll to Win-River Casino Monday evening.
Jett has forged a readily identifiable image, and her strong work ethic has made her an undeniable force in rock music. She's known for the huge hit "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," but who knew about the USO tours or that she was the first entertainer to play East Germany after the wall came down?
Her fans knew.
And so did Bill O'Reilly. A snippet from O'Reilly's Web site, taken from his show of July 26, 2004 had this to say:
"Jett has made many recent tours with the USO, and the Factor praised her, saying, 'We applaud the fact that entertainers of all political persuasions go out there and entertain the troops.'"
Jett has toured steadily since she started playing music with the RUNAWAYS in the '70s. Her career has weathered nearly three decades of music business changes and she's still rocking.
She was among the earliest crop of serious female musicians in hard rock. She's been a vanguard in that respect, but her gender has never really been the point. It's all about the work.
Jett and longtime business and musical partner KENNY LAGUNA took Jett's music in a purposeful direction early on. After leaving the band the RUNAWAYS and the Svengali-like clutches of that band's mastermind, Kim Fowley, Jett met Laguna and together they started BLACKHEART RECORDS. They've been working together for 15 years.
"We have a unique relationship that sometimes has incredible advantages," says Laguna on Jett's Web site. "We've been together so long that we have a real understanding about what kind of music we should do together; which is a little bit of my pop sensibility and a little bit of her punk sensibility split right down the middle.
"In the world I live in, loyalty is one of the most important things," says Laguna. The statement must be true. Jett and the BLACKHEARTS, which includes Laguna, will play Win-River not quite two weeks after the death of Laguna's father, who died of cancer on Sept. 1.
The tour goes on. Jett and Laguna will be giving fans a chance to hear some solid rock 'n' roll and a chance to buy "Naked," an album previously available only as a Japanese import.
