New Olympic ideals bare a coarse nature

ATHENS — Well, there's one more thing to knock off the list of stuff you didn't expect to live long enough to witness: watching one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people pitch a nearly perfect softball game at the Olympics in Greece.

Who really thought the Athens organizers would get their act together in time for 2004, anyway?

The rest of it actually makes a whole lot more sense than pigs flying, in a world where lines are constantly blurring, where celebrity and sport and entertainment are all part of one big, noisy neon flash.

Seeing Jennie Finch of the United States, tall, blond and, indeed, gorgeous, mow down Canadian batters effortlessly in a neat little stadium on what was once the tarmac of the Athens airport is really no more dissonant than a whole lot of other things here. The Olympics are slowly but surely beginning to look like just another wing of McCulture.

Listen to the music they were playing between innings: the Ramones, JOAN JETT, Outkast, rock 'n' roll, R&B, and the theme from Green Acres.

When baseball and softball were first introduced to the Summer Games, the sports were there clearly on the International Olympic Committee's terms. There was no music, there were no hot dogs, no one sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the seventh-inning stretch. This was the non-commercial church of sport, free of the vulgarisms that had crept into the North American professional games.
