JOAN JETT was born Joan Marie Larkin in Philadelphia. After spending much of her childhood in Baltimore, her family moved to Southern California, where the 15-year-old became a fixture at L.A. rock clubs.

At 8 p.m. Friday, Jett will perform at the Brown County Fair grandstand. Her early influences included Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Suzi Quatro.

In 1976, when Jett was 15, she and drummer Sandy West created The RUNAWAYS, a Los Angeles band comprised of teen-age girls. The other members included guitarist Lita Ford and lead vocalist Cherie Currie.

The group broke up on New Year's Eve in 1979.

The BLACKHEARTS began performing in 1980 at Los Angeles' Whiskey a Go-Go.

Signature smash

Her 1982 single, "I Love Rock 'N Roll in 1982," spent seven straight weeks at No. 1.

Jett's other hits include "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Crimson and Clover," "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," "Little Liar," "Bad Reputation," "Light of Day," "Fake Friends," "Everyday People," "Dirty Deeds" and "Cherry Bomb."

Jett has also won praise for acting.

She co-starred as Michael J. Fox's sister in the1987 movie, "Light of Day." In his annual movie guide, Leonard Maltin wrote that "real-life rock star JOAN JETT steals the movie with her compelling performance."

In addition, Jett appeared in a movie called "Boogie Boy," and episodes of the TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Highlander."

Independent films

Jett also acted in the independent films "By Hook or by Crook," "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" and "The Sweet Life." The latter film was named best romantic comedy at the 2003 New York International international film and video festival.

In 2001, Jett starred in "The Rocky Horror Show" on Broadway.

Her music has been used to promote the Women's Final Four and the X Games. One of the songs used was her version of "Love is All Around," the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" theme.

Her song "Bad Reputation" was used in "Ten Things I Hate About You." It also served as the theme to the TV series, "Freaks and Geeks."

A Ripken favorite

Here's an interesting sports fact about Jett. She sang the national anthem at the request of Cal Ripken Jr. at the game where he broke Lou Gehrig's record.

Jett's publicist distributed the guitarist's answers to a list of frequently asked questions.

When asked her age, Jett says, "Never ask a woman her age, but I am younger than you think."

She is also asked if there is anything she would like us to know that had not been asked here or before.

"I am not mean," she responded.
